    Who commissioned shoes with two-­‐inch heels to make her appear taller on her wedding day with Henry II of France in 1533. The French Revolution marked a turning point, however, and by 1800 high heels were out of fashion. Napoleon actually banned heels due to their association with aristocracy. Flat slippers and sandals become popular at this time. In the late twentieth century high heels have been controversial. Feminists in the 1970s argued heels oppressed and stereotyped women.
  • Umbrellas

    It wasn't until the 1600s that European women began to carry umbrellas, mostly as shade from the sun. Sometime in the 1700s it became popular to carry wood and oilcloth models as protection from the rain. In 1750, an Englishman named Jonah Hanway decided to carry an umbrella everywhere he went. Hanway carried his umbrella for 30 years. By the late 1700s however, it became more acceptable for men to carry "hanways".
    In 1852, Samuel Fox invented the steel ribbed kind that we see today.

    In 1975, IBM created the first microcomputer ­‐ the IBM Portable PC 5100. It was more self­‐reliant, rather than portable The next year: The birth of the first modern-­‐looking laptop arrived with the GRiD Compass 1101. 5 years later: Apple made its grand entrance with the Macintosh Portable, complete with a high definition screen and tremendously fast 16MHz processor. Nowadays: Fast forward to today, laptops are now smaller, lighter, faster, and more appealing in style and capabilities.
