    This event is important because this is when Jethro's family finds out that the war has started. The family has mixed emotions about this news. Eb Carron, a cousin, wants to join if there is a war.
    Shadrach comes home with a newspaper saying that the war had started and the confederates had attacked Ft. Sumter. Congress had to officially announce the war, but the others knew that they would.

    Conscription in the Civil WarThis event is important because this is when Jethro first loses Bill. Bill choses to join the war, and Jethro breaks down in tears.
    Jethro saw Bill on a hill, so he goes to talk to him. He learns that Bill had a fight with John because Bill wanted to fight. Jethro begged Bill to stay, but Bill tells him that he wants to fight. He doesn't want to go, but he says he has to fight.

    Civil War stratigiesThis event is important because Shadrach explains the importance of the battles to Jethro. He explains how the Union plans on defeating the Confederates: by seperating them into two parts so it is easier to defeat them.
    Jethro understands how important it is and you see how much he admires Shadrach. He shows Jethro the route the Union soldiers will be taking, and what they will do.

    Dead soldiers articlesThis event is important because Tom is Jethro's brother. He starts to realize how bad war can be. Jethro is pretty upset about Tom, and so is his family.
    A friend of Tom's, Dan Lawrence, came to the family's house. He explained that at the battle of Pittsburg Landing, Tom had died. There was an article put in the newspaper, scorning the people who had burned down the barn, talking about how that was wrong because the Creightons had lost Tom.

    A Civil War barn caught on fireThis event shows Jethro how serious supporters of the Union cause were. Some mean guys threatened Jethro and his family about Bill.
    They heard that Bill was fighting for the Confederates, and they were upset about it. The kept threatening them about it, and finally burned down their barn.
  • Eb the Deserter

    List of DesertersJethro learns that there is a big camp nearby that is full of war deserters. This event is important because he realizes how bad a war can be to a person.
    When he is plowing, he hears a turkey call. He picks up his gun and leaves to the forest. He sees that it was Eb, who became a deserter to. He starts to take care of Eb, even though he knows that he will get into trouble if he is caught.
    He sends a letter to Abraham Lincoln, who replies and says that if Eb can return without punishment.

    Battle of GettysburgThis event is important, because in the Battle of Gettysburg, Shadrach gets a bad injury. Jethro was in jeopardy of loosing his teacher and idol.
    Shadrach was in the Battle of Gettysburg and got a bad injury that got infected. His aunt had him in his care and wrote to the Creightons to tell them about it. Jenny went to see him, and eventually Jenny and Shadrach got married. Shadrach lived.

    This event is very important because it was a very hard time for Jethro. He thought of Abe Lincoln as a close friend, and it was hard for him to let him go.
    Jethro was plowing and Nancy came out to tell him about it. Jethro was extremely upset. He wanted to go see the President's train go by. Shadrach showed up and told him that he could. He comforted Jethro.
