After 3 years of fighting with the army, Ishmael is sent to the city to be with many other boys. At first his stay he gets into fights but then is put into the hostpital because of injuries. Eventually Ishmael is calmed down and goes to New York to finish his 2 years of highchool.

In a long way gone Ishmael is a young boy when he is first touched by the war. He was living in Mogbwemo with his family. He and his older brother, Junior, and their friend Talloi all left home on their way to Mattru Jong. Once in Mattru Jong they keep running from the war. After running for so long, they come upon many places and get threated many times by the villagers thinking they were spys for the rebels(RUF). Then the group comes upon the army and fights with the army.
