    Passed under president John Adams, gives the US the right to deport foreginors deemed to be dangerous. Also increases residency required for citizenship to 14 years. Part of the Alien and Sedition Acts
  • Jefferson's Revision

    Jefferson's Revision
    Jefferson changes the limits of the Naturalization laws which were part of the Alien and Sedition Acts. The length of time required for citizenship is changed from 14 years to 5 years.
  • Adams-Onis Treaty

    Adams-Onis Treaty
    Adam-Onis Treaty establishes U.S.-Mexico boundary. Massive immigrations begin to the United States across this boundary.
  • Steerage Act

    Steerage Act
    Congress passess first immigration act which would require all shipmasters to list their immigrants on a manifest. Secratery of state is required to report to congress annually on the number of immigrants to the United States.

    Irish potatoe famine leads to massive numbers of Irish immigrants to the United States over the next 6 years. Millions of Irish flood the docks of the east coast looking for work.
  • Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo

    Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo
    Ends the Mexican-American War and extends US territories to much of the southwest including most the territory that would later become Arizona. Grants citizenship to 80,000 Mexicans living in the new US territory.

    Last major addition to the contiguous United States. Territory would become final pieces of present day Arizona and New Mexico. Established the present day boundary between the US and Mexico.

    Arizona passes new immigration bill. Considered toughest anti-immigration law ever passed. Meant to limit and control flow of illegal immigrants from across the Mexican border.

    SB1070 Rejected
    United States Supreme Court rejects much of Arizonia's immigration act (SB1070). Court declares its laws interfere with the federal governments immigration policies.
