A group of women put Murphy's name as a candidate for the senate. She was than refused by the government because she's not a "qualified person". A legal action took 12 years.

The Spanish flu appeared in world war 1 (1914-1918). The allies in the war called this outbreak "Spanish Flu" as it traveled from France to Spain in the fall of 1918.

In October 1929 the value of stocks started to drop, people panicked so they decide to sell and get out of the market. That only made prices drop lower, as more stocks were dropped. Nothing could stop it.

The great depression started after the stock market fell. The depression began, very few were prepared for the condition's in the depression years.

In 1932 the government set up a number of relief camps across the contrary for young single unemployed men. The camps were operated by the department of national defense. Single men of 18 years of age or older worked eight hours a day. Cutting bushes, moving rocks, building roads. They were given shelter, clothing, and payed 20 cents a day in return. The camps were meant to provide drifters and unemployed men useful jobs. 20 cents was considered no better then slave labor to most.

By 1933 almost a third of Canadians were out of work people roamed the contrary, hitching ride's from trains, trying to find odd jobs to do. With no income from jobs, there wasn't money for food, clothing and other needs.

In June1935 the men of relief camps were fed up. The life of relief camps in British Columbia was no place for living and the men were done, The man boarded freight trains bound for Ottawa to protest to the government. A riot broke out, in which dozens were injured and a police office was killed the process.
