    Law said no one could own another person. Slaves were freed, but very poor. Laws kept them separate, segragated, from using same places as white people. EG: schools, buses, water fountains, restaurants, etc.
  • Lincoln is killed

    Angry white man assassinated him.
  • Special rules for black on segregated buses

    Blacks pay at front door, then leave and walk to back door. Driver may take off before paid rider gets back on. Front seats reserved for whites, back ones for blacks. Mean drivers carried guns to enforce blacks to move if there were more whites needing seats.
  • Martin Luther King's birthday

    Today Jan. 19 is Dr. Martin LUther King Day in USA to honor him.
  • Blacks pay extra to register to vote

    Rosa took the test to be able to register to vote three times before they said she had passed it. She knew she had answered correctly the 2nd time! Then she had to pay $1.50 for every year older than 21 (she was 32). Whites paid just $1.50 for the year in which they registered.
  • Violence gets worse

    Hatred of whites for blacks led to much violence against them. Blacks who fought for USA were treated with little respect in USA. Teenagers were arrested.
  • Ruby Bridges goes to school with policemen

    Judge ordered her parents to send her to white kids' school as first black student ever. White people threatened her, yelling and screaming, for many days as she walked up the steps.
  • Rosa refuses to give up her seat to white man

    She was tired of being pushed around, told what to do and not do , by white people who treated blacks with little or no respect. She was arrested and put in jail, only because her skin was black. Blacks refused to ride buses for the next year, until the laws would be changed.
  • Blacks boycott buses

    White people threw bombs and shot at cars and taxis carrying black people. Bomb killed 4 little girls in a church. Dr. King was stabbed by a racist man.
    Blacks sang, "We shall overcome."
  • Dr. King: "I have a dream" speech

    250,000people who had marched to Washington, D.C. for civil rights of black people
  • New law gives more protection

    PPresident Johnson signed it, but it did not change people's hearts or hatred.
  • Rosa marches with Dr. King in Alabama

    They got permission, followed the rules, for 4 days
  • Dr. King was shot and killed

  • Rosa Parks Boulevard

    12th street was renamed after Rosa, to honor her courage to stay sitting when it was her right as a person to keep her seat, in 1955.
  • Equal education law passed

    Laws were wrong to keep blacks and white children in separate schools, because they did not have equal materials to use.
  • New law gives blacks right to vote

    New laws were evidence King's method of nonviolence was working, following Gandhi's in India, to set Indian people free from England's control. Rosa thought not fighting back was the best way to win!
