  • Election of 1860

    When trying to elect a canidate for the democratic party, the party split into the anit-slavery and por-slavery supporting states. Stephen Douglas was ultimatley chosen to fight for the Fugitive Slave Law. Of course, Abrahma Lincoln won the election and caused the south to suceed from the Union.

  • Fort Sumter

    Fort Sumter was built following the War of 1812 in the Charleston Harbor in South Coarolina. It was still unfinished when the first shots of the American Civil War were fired at the Battle of Fort Sumter. The Union had control of it at the start of the War, but lost the surrendered Fort Sumter after 34 hours of fighting, while many Charleston residents watching and saluting. This marked the beginning of the South's Fight for secession.
  • WInfield Sctott and the Anaconda Plan

    The acting General of the North, General Winfield Scott, proposed a plan to corner the South so to speak.
  • Battle of Bull Run

    The Battle of Bull Run was the first major battle of the Civil War. ALthough the Union fought long and hard and looked like they were going to come out with the win, the Confedereate army sent reinforcements and won the battle sending Union troops back to Washington D.C. This began the myth that the Rebels were invincible in battle and that the war would be fairly short with a Confederate victory.

    The Second battle that took place at Bull RUn was also won by the Confederacy.

  • Battle of Antietam

    This was the first major battle of the American Civil wasr to take place on Union soil. The bloodiest day in history, 22,000 Americans lives were lost. General McClellan launched an attack on the Conferate forces after luring them into Maryland. The conferates were higly outmunbered altought General McClellan did not use all of his forces avaliable. The Union succeded in making the Rebels retreat and this "win" was inspiration enough for Lincoln to pass the Emancipation Proclamation.
  • Battle of Fredericksburg

    The Union was under new command again, this time General Burnside. The Union army had a good plan to cut through the confederate lines however did not recieve the proper support and supplies and therefore could not acomplish the goal they set for themsevles. The Union finally withdrew after four long days of fighting.
  • Thomas Stonewall Jackson

    Jackson was the best know General of the Confederate army after Lee. He demonstareted great military experitse at battles such as the Battle of Antietam and the First battle of Manassas, in which he recieved the nickname "stonewall". He was the acting Genereal when he was accidentally shot in the Battle of Chancellorsville. He amazingly survived but died of pneumonia eight days later. His death devestated not only the Conferate army but the spirit of the south as a whole.
