    Election of 1860
The election of 1860 was the final factor that caused the South to leave the Union. Stephen Douglas, Abraham Lincoln, John Bell, and John Breckinridge were the presidential candidates. Douglas (northern Democrat) and Breckinridge (southern Democrat) together accumulated more popular votes than Lincoln.
