  • Civil War in Nicaragua

    The Civil War in Nicaragua was fought for the set up of a liberal government in a place that needed it. With the assitance of the US, liberal Nicaraguins fought against the rebels to assure their government. This is important becasue it demonstrates how willing America is to help nations who want a democratic form of government.

  • Mao Zedong takes control of China

    The communist leader Mao Zedong takes control of China after defeating Chiang Kai Check in the civil war of Nationalists and Communists. This is important to cold war history to show that Communists have defeated Nationalists and will cause conflict with UN later.

  • Korean War

    This war was fought by North Korea which was supported by Soviet Union and China and South Korea which was supported by UN and the USA. It was the first armed conflict of the war in US attempts to destroy communism. This event was the real beginning of the Cold War.

  • Vietnam War

    The war was fought over communist North Vietnam and its allies and South Vietnam supported by US and Anti-communists allies.
    The war was important to the US because it showed how serious they were about the containment of communism. The war was over when the North took Saigon.

  • Soviet Invasion of Hungary

    The Hungarian people wanted to revolt against the Soviet Union and their policies. It started peacefully but soon became violent. Revolution spread quickly and people created their own militias. The Soviet Union soon sent in it's troops and crushed the rebellion.

  • Fidel Castro Takes over Cuba

    Fidel Castro took over Cuba after the Cuban Revolution that overthrew the Baltisa Government backed by USA. This effects the Cold war by introducing one of the Communist leaders that joined forced with USSR to help destroy US and UN.

  • Bay of Pigs Invasion

    This was a failed attempt to overthrow the new Governmet set up by Fidel Castro by Cuban exiles with the help of US training. This was unsucessful and proved to be a humiliating failure. This helped escalate the Cold War by breaking the little trust that was their and creating more tension by these to rival countries/

  • Cuban Missile Crisis

    US intellegence found that the USSR was building missile bases in Cuba that could wipe out the United States. After negotiations the Soviets took them away along with their nuclear weapons in trade that the US never invade Cuba. This is important because it is reguarded as one of the closest times that the Cold War took off to a Nuclear Missile War.

  • Soviet Invasion of Czechoslovakia

    The invasion took place to stop the libertarian reforms that Alexander Dubeck introduced the Prague Spring in attempts to end the Soviet Communist government that was in Czechoslovakia. The soviets invaded and through violence stopped the reforms. This made the war more tense due to the measures the sovets will take to destroy any reforms against them.

  • Nixon visits China.

    The US president Richard Nixon visited China in means to help create "peace" between the two nations. It was very important because at this time China was one of the US greatese foes and to come to china to try to make peace was never done before.

  • SALT treaty talks

    This treaty was used by President Jimmy Carter to try to limit the Number of nuclear weapons and the creation of new missle and weapon systems. This is important to the war because it helped releave some of the pressure of the Cold War between US and USSR.

  • Revolution in Iran

    The shi'a started a revoltion against the shah and was very popular. Its supporters overthrew a very powerful and lavish government which usually dosen't succeed but it did and it shocked.

  • Soviet Invasion of Afghanistan

    This was a war between the Marxist government supported by the USSR and the Mujahideen supported by the US and other muslium contries. This added to the Cold war because it put even more strain on the communist governments verses other forms of government which was the basis of the Cold War.

  • Iran/Iraq War

    This war was fought over Iran and Iraq and started when Iraq attacked Iran after it's revolution, It is important to the Cold War becasue it showed the tension between two nations.

  • Mikhail Gorbachev takes control of USSR

    He was the last leader of the soviet union. He was more known to help end tensons with the US. He introduced new reforms that stopped military funds to help the declining of the Soviet Union economy. He also added a open door policy which helped US and Soviet relations. He met with President Ronald Regan to discuss an end to the Political Arms Race and was given the nobel peace prize for his efforts. This is important because it really helped to detente the realationship between US and USSR.

  • Fall of Berlin Wall

    THe wall separating east Germany(communist) and west Germany ( democratic) was torn down. This united Germany for the first time since WW2. This is important because it was a rebellion against the soviet union that was sucessful.

  • Soviet Union falls apart

    With the declining Economy of the Soviet Union and Nationalist Rebellion the fall of the USSR was envetable. The Nationalist were picking up supporters with their leader Boris Yeltsin. Soon with national debt all 11 nations declared their independece from the Soviet Union. The People then overthrew USSR government and the Soviet Union is no more. This is important becasue it marks the end of the Cold War.
