    Civil War in Nicaragua

    Sacasa set up a rival government on Nicaraguan coasts leading to various disputes which were only advanced by US involvement. Ended when the US withdrawled from Nicaarague and Sandino was killed.
  • Mao Zedong takes control of China

    He and the People's Republic of China won the election and then proceded to attack, kill, or imprison anyone who opposed him.

    Korean War

    Began when North Korea invaded South Korea to gain more land and spread communism to which the US and UN imediately sent in armed support. A cease fire was issued but the war has yet to officialy end since there has never been a treaty signed.
  • Revolution in Iran

    The US CIA overthrew the democraticallt elected government which led to 25 years of dictaroship. US provided weapons to those who wished to defend themselves until that government's overthrow in 1979.
  • Soviet Invasion of Hungary

    Things turned violent when police attack protesters in Budapest causing the protesters to fight back. They were further enraged when the Soviets sent in troops. A man called Nagy took office as prime minister and eventually withdrawled from the Warsaw Pact. The Soviets responded by taking over Budapest.

    Vietnam War

    North Vietnam was communist controlled while US-supported South Vietnam was noncommunist. North Vietnam wanted to combine the two into a single nation and stop US support of the south. the war ended when the South finally surrendered to the North.
  • Fidel Castro Takes Over Cuba

    After the former prime minister was removed, Fidel was returned to his original position.
  • Bay of Pigs Invasion

    A group of 1300 exiles armed with US weapons invaded the Bay of Pigs with the intention of crossing the island tto Havana. Since the US decided not to sent in people to reinforce the invasion, the exiles lost, many having been killed or taken prisioner.
  • Cuban Missile Crisis

    Castro feared another attack on Cuba and, with Soviet help, created his own stash of missiles on the island. Kennedy responded by putting a naval quantine on the island. Ended when the Soviet Union agreed to dismantle its missiles in exchange for the US promising not to invade Cuba.
  • Soviet Union invasion of Czechoslovakia

    Warsaw Pact troops invaded Czech. in an attempt to crush the series of economic and political reforms called the Prague Spring.

    SALT Treaty Talks

    Restricted several things including no new construction of ICBM silos, limiting nuclear missile production, strengthening defenses, and various other things along that line. The treaties were signed in May of 1972.
  • Nixon Visits China

    Nixon was only there for one week and it was his only trip to China. Its main goal was to try to normalize relationships with China.
  • Soviet Invasion of Afghanistan

    Russian paratroopers landed in Kabul in December and told the publis that they were invited into the country by the current government to help out them out, not invading the country. The Russians then shot their leader, Amin, and put in place Kamal in order to spread communism and gain territory.

    Iran/Iraq War

    The war began when Iraq, led by Saddam Hussein, invaded Iran. It was not only about territory but also about a centuries old fued between the Sunnis and the Shittes. Ended on August 20, 1988.
  • Mikhail Gorbachev takes control of USSR

    After his predecessors' deaths, he was elected Generla Secertary of the Communist party. He then proceded to implement various plans to try and improved working and living conditions of his people. His democratic ideas and plans led to the downfall of the Soviet Unoin and the end of the Cold War.
  • Fall of the Berlin Wall

    One reason it was taken down was to allow travle to the other sides of the wall.
  • Soviet Union Falls Apart

    Party leaders had tried and failed to overthrow Mikhail Gorbachev leading to the formation of various former Soviet Union republic confederation which then stated their independence.
