Cold War Timeline

  • Mao Zedong takes control of China

    On October 20, 1949 Mao Zedong became chairman of China. HE claimed to bring joy with communism and prove the advantages of communism. In reality he created the Red Guard to kill those who opposed him. He also made himself a god to the people of China.
  • Korean War

    On june 25, 1950 North Korea invaded South Korea and the Korean war had begun. the conflict was over communism; north Korea was for it but South Korea was against it. Communism took over Korea and still rules it today.
  • vietnam War

    The Vietnam War was fought between Southern Vietnam (supported by the U.S.) and Northern Vietnam ( supported by communist forces). At first teh north used guerrilla warfare, but in 1975 they launched an invasion on the south.
  • Soviets invade Hungary

    The Soviets invaded Hungary in response to a student rally supporting Polish ways and tearing down symbols of Soviet rule. On Nov 3, 1956 teh Soviet army surrounded Budapest (site of rally) and closeed the country's boarders.
  • Fidel Castro takes control of Cuba

    Castro led two failed attacks on the Moncada army. Castro went into the mountains for two years gatherong support and training in guerrilla warfare. On jan 1, 1959 Castro became the sefl appointed ruler of cuba. With castro in charge, Cuba's economy went downhill and the country declined.
  • The Bay of Pigs Invasion

    this was a failed attempt to overthrow the Cuban dictator, Fidel Castro. on April 17, 1961 the U.S. and Cuban exiles landed on teh Bay of Pigs and Castro's army defeated them.
  • Cuban Missile Crisis

    The U.S. saw pictures showing Soviet missiles being made in Cuba. On Oct 22 the U.S. put the island on lock down.
  • Soviet invasion of Czech. Republic

    On August 20, 1968 the Soviet Union, east Germany, Bulgaria, Hungary, and Poland invaded the Czech Republic. They did this inviolation of the Warsaw Pact, because the Soviet Union wanted more military power.
  • SALT Treaty talks

    this was negotiations about nuclear arms conttrol. Aslo known as Strategic Arms Limitation Talks.
  • Nixon visits China

    President Nixon went to China and visited the People's Republic of China. He did this to confirm relations between the U.S. and China.
  • revolution in Iran

    The clash of modern western ways and traditional Islamic values sparked the Iran revolution of 1979.
  • Soviet invasion of Afganistan

    Around Christmas 1979 Russian troops landed in the capital of Afganistan. the prime minister wanted to westernize Afganistan. However, muslim religious leaders disagrreed and fought a holy battle.
  • Iran/Iraq War

    this war had the first chemical warfare since WWI. it was also teh longest and bloodiest war since WWII. there were over 1 million deaths. It finally ended in 1988.
  • Civil War in Nicaragua

    The civil war in Nicarague started in 1981 and lasted until 1989. It was a war between the Sandinista and the revolutionary Contras which the U.S. supported. Each side built mines to prevent the other from gaining territory. After the civil war Nicaragua started to demine itself.
  • Mikhail Gorbachev takes control of the USSR

    On march 11, 1985 Gorbachev was elected gerneral Secretary of the CPSU and the new leader of the Soviet Union. he tried many things to change the economy; one being a reform in the Soviet economy.
  • the fall of the Berlin Wall

    the Berlin wall separated east and west Germany. Once the wall came down Germans could pass back and forth as they please. This act lead to teh unification of Germany. teh demollishment of the Berlin Wal was finished on Oct 3, 1990.
  • Collapse of the Soviet Union

    The Soviet Union finally collapsed in 1991 when Boris Yelton gained control after a failed government take over.
