Timeline of World War Two

  • Battle Of Britain

    This was a name given to the air campaign waged by the German Air Force against the United Kingdom in hopes to gain air superiority over the Royal Air Force.
  • FDR approves "Shoot on sight"

    In the early 1940's FDR declared "shoot on sight" because United States vessels were being attacked and/or destroyed by Germany.
  • Japan Joins Axis

    Japan joins the Axis. The Axis was the alliance of Germany and Italy until Japan joined. This allowed the countries to grow and develope in hopes to gain control and become very powerful countries. This also allowed Japan to take control of the Pacific.
  • Hitler Breaks Non-Aggression agreement and invades the Soviet Union

    Germany invades Russia (The Soviet Union) during World War Two with over 4.5 million troops along a 1,800 mile front breaking the Non-Agrerssion Pact. The Axis power created this massive number of troops the invaded Russia (under the code name Operation Barbarossa).
  • Japanese Ambassadors Arrive in Washington, D.C.

    They come to speak with our president of the United States Franklin D. Roosevelt. What nerve!
  • Pearl Harbor Attack

    Surprise Japenese air strike on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Thus, the United States becomes a part of World War Two.
  • Germany and Italy Declare War on United States

    Since Japan attacked United States soil, the US declared war. Japan is a part of the alliance of Axis and so war on Japan means war with Axis. Germany and Italy are a part of Axis. The United States responds in declaring war with the Axis powers.
  • MacArthur promises return

  • Bataan Death March

    Was counted as a Japanese war crime, the march occured in the Philippines. A course of 60 miles was covered and it was all for the Battle of Bataan which occured three months before the march.
  • Battle of Coral Sea

    Between the Japanese Navy and allied Navy of the United States and Australia. First fleet action where aircraft carriers engaged each other making it the first naval battle in history where neither side fired or sighted directly upon each other. A major Naval battle in the Pacific.
  • Battle of Midway

    Sometimes regarded as the most important Naval Battle in the Pacific because the United States defeated the attempted Japanese naval attack at Midway; six months after the Pearl Harbor attack. The defeated japanese suffered a terribel blow and much damage from the attack from the Unityed States.
  • Guadalcanal

    This was a battlea fought on and around the island of Guadalcanal. Ground, air, and sea were occupied with allied forces the launched and offensive attack against the Empire of Japan.
  • General Eisenhower and his forces land in North Africa

    During Worald War Two the british and Americans invaded French North Africa. In Africa a North African Campaign was in progress. Another name for this invasion is Operation Torch.
  • Vichy France Begins

    France was divided witha German occupation zone on the North and West while the other was an unoccupied zone on the south. On the web site they call it metropolitain France .
  • End of battle of stalingrad

    The German 6 Army surrendered.
  • Sicily Falls

    Amphibious and air born operation with six weeks of land combat. This was very large scale and it is where Allies take Sicily from Germany and Italy, or better known as the Axis.
  • Rome Falls

    The allied forces take over Rome. This is their first Axis Capitol that they take over.
  • D-Day

    Known as Normady Landing. Where Allied forces landed in Normady during the invasion in World War Two.
  • MacArthur Returns

    Kept promise returning to the Phillipines two and a half yeaers ago. He came with naval vessels and a huge invasion force. He vreated liberation of the Phillipines from the Japanese.
  • Kamikaze Attacks begin

    Six suicide crafts plunge into four aircraft carriers. These four aircrafts being: USS Hancock, USS Essex, USS Cabot, and USS Intrepid. There was one Kamikaze attack in the past that occurred on the ships of the Third Fleet heading off from the Phillipines coast.
  • Battle of the Bulge

    Germans attacked a weak area in the allied lines, this being the Germans last offensive move. They wanted to split the British and the American armies hoping to cut them off from supplies. They were going to do this by capturing Antwerp and Belgium. Unfortuanlty, they were unsuccessful.
  • U.S Flag raised on Mount Suribachi

    The raising of the flag from a few brave Marines at the summit of Mount Suribachi during the battle of Iowa Jima.
  • Okinawa Taken

    Largest Amphibious assault. Located on the Ryukyu Islands of Okinawa, Japan. This was an eighty-two day long battle.
  • Truman Becomes President

    Roosevelt died 3 months into his fourth term as president. Truman then bacame the 33rd president of the United States of America.
  • Hitler Commits Suicide

    Epic end with a head shot and cyanide poisoing, which he did to himself. Though there have been rumors about Hitler surviving World War two, the public never really heard where Hitlers remains were left and so many rumors were made.
  • V-E Day

    When Allies formally accepted the "unconditional" surrender of Nazi Germany and the end of the Third Reich.
  • Hiroshima

    United States trying to end the war.
  • Nagasaki

    Japanese not accepting the fact that the United States wants to end the war.
  • V-J Day

    End of World War Two is nearing because the Japanese surrender.
  • Formal surrender of Japan

    Emperor Hirohito surrendered because the suffereing of his people shouldn't happen no longer. He said that it was hard to bare and see so he needed to stop the war after the bombing of Nagasaki.
