First Negro History Week Dr. Carter G. Woodson's parents who used to be slaves and when he grew up and went to college, he noticed that the history of African Americans was inaccurate or left out of many history books. He worked to bring recognition to blacks in American history. He chose the second week in February because of the birthdays of Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln.
