    Death of the great Gladiator

    A Roman army under Marcus Licinius Crassus surrounded Spartacus' army in southern Italy. In the ensuing battle, Spartacus and most of his followers were killed. Those captured were put to death.

    Enslaved by the Romans, he broke out of a gladiatorial school in Capua with about 70 other gladiators and succeeded in reaching the crater of Mt. Vesuvius.
