    Former California Governor Ronald Reagan defeated Jimmy Carter in a landslide election. This was important to the US because it entered an era that would end the emotional turmoil of the Cold War.

  • John Lennon Assassinated

    A month after Reagan’s election, a fan shot and killed John Lennon outside his New York home. Lennon’s death spelled the end of the 60s and 70s culturally.

  • Ronald Reagan Assassination

    While leaving the Washington Hilton Hotel , President Reagan and three others were shot and wounded by John Hinckley Jr. This impacted the the US by it was another attempt at a presidence life.

  • Pope John Paul II assassination attempt

    The Pope was shot and wounded while he was entering the square. This was an imact on the US, because just two months before the President had been shot and wounded.

  • First Woman Appointed to the U.S. Supreme Court

    Sandra Day O'Connor became the first woman on the U.S. Supreme Court. This was a major turning point in womans rights in US history.

  • E.T. Movie Released

    The movie E.T, was a hit from the day it was released and became one of the most beloved movies of all time. This one of the first great movies of the 1980s.

  • The Challenger Disaster

    The space shuttle Challenger exploded just after a minuite into its launch. All seven crew members died and the shuttle fell into the Atlantic Ocean. This was a national disaster that made the US relook at the saftey of space travel.

  • Fox Broadcasting Company Launched

    Fox launched its network and it became a hit. The impact is that Fox is still a Hit network even though it has been almost 27 years.

  • The Tiananmen Square Massacre

    One man. in china, stood in the way of a column of military tanks. The tanks were sent out by government officials after a vistit from the leader of the soviet union. There may have been over 100,000 protesters, but no one knows how many died. This impacted the US, by showing that communism was failing.

  • The Fall of the Berlin Wal

    The Soviet Union could no longer keep their empire that they weorked so hard to build. They had gone bankrupt trying to keep up with the American military buildup. The impact on the united states was that this ended the cold war and ended a war that spanded over four decades.
