  • The Cold War

    The Cold War
    The Cold War was a conflict between the US and the Soviet Union in which neither nation directly confronted the other on a battlefield. It was basically a competition to show who was bigger and better when it came to nuclear weapons. At first, they competed to explode the first Hydrogen Bomb. After the US won that, the Space Race began to see who could launch the first satellite.

    In 1953, the US threatened to bomb China, but eventually a ceasefire was declared between UN forces and Korean/Chinese forces.

  • United states explodes the first hydrogen bomb

    United states explodes the first hydrogen bomb
    The test gave the US a short-lived advantage in the nuclear arms race with the Soviet Union. The hydrogen bomb was a new weapon that was approximatel 1,000 times more powerful than conventional nuclear devices.
  • 22 Amendment

    22 Amendment
    The 22nd Amendment limited the number of terms anyone could serve as president. Any individual could serve no more than two terms as President of the United States. It was passed after Franklin Roosevelt was elected to a record of four terms as president.
  • The Native American Termination Act

    The goal was to end Indian tribes' status as a sovereign nation. It was the movement of Native Americants to the urban areas. The congress wanted to give each individual the rights as citizens.
  • Desegregation

    Desegregation
    1955-Rosa Parks, a 43 year old black seamstress, was arrested in Montgomery, Alabama, for refusing to give up her bus seat to a white man.

  • Montgomery Bus Boycott

    Montgomery Bus Boycott
    Rosa Parks was too tired after a long day at work to move to the back of the bus to the section reserved for African Americans. She was arrested for violating the segregation law. This sparked a massive African American protest in Montgomery in the form of a boycott against riding the city buses.
  • Sputnik 1

    Sputnik 1
    The Sputnik 1 was designed by Soviets for the Space Race. The purpose was for it to be the first artificial satellite. The Sputnik 1 was followed by the launch of Sputnik 2 which carried the dog Laika.
  • NASA is established

    NASA is established
    NASA was established by President Eisenhower because the Soviets launched Sputnik 1 on October 4 in 1957. US was shocked and wanted to beat the Soviets. This helped establish a Space Race between the two countries.
  • The Day the Music Died

    The Day the Music Died
    A chartered plane crashed near Clear Lake, Iowa, because of foggy weather. Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, J.P. "The Big Bopper" Richardson, and pilot Roger Peterson, all died that day.
