    The Korean war was also referred to as the forgotten war because of how it coexisted with World War II and the Vietnam war. The reason that this started was because they were fighting for control and because North Korea invaded South Korea by passing through the 38th paraellel that separated the two regions.

    Fourty nine nations sign Japans peace treaty but it wasn't until a month later that Truman signs the treaty, officially ending World War II.

    At the age of 56, King George dies in his sleep after struggling for years with lung cancer. By night it was announced that the new monarch would be Queen Elizabeth II.

    Dr. Jonas Salk announces on a national radio show that he has successfully tested a vaccine against poliomyelitis, the virus that causes the crippling disease of polio.

    Originally it was said that segregation was seperate but equal. But in 1954 brown vs. board of education over ruled plessy vs.ferguson by saying that it was unequal. Even after this was established though it still took years before it was even taken serious.

    As Rosa was coming home from work she was seated on a bus in the colored section. Even though this was illegal they were still separated. The bus drivers bus quickly became full and demanded that Parks gave her seat up to a white man. Rosa parks responded by refusing to give up her seat. Four days later parks was convicted of disorderly conduct.

  • Little rock nine

    Little rock nine
    Little rock nine is named after nine black teenagers that were the first black teenagers to attened all-white Central High school in Little Rock, Arkansas. This is three years after the brown vs. board of education called segregation unconstitutional. This being in place and segregation still going on, the government refused to make the nine people leave the school so they were able to finish the school year. After the school year was over, all high schools were closed until two years later.

    The Soviet Union launches Sputnik on October 4th, 1957.The world's first artificial satellite was about the size of a beach ball and marked the start of the Space Race. Everything was about to change for the USA and Soviet Union. Not even a year later the United States launched the Explorer.

    This treaty was signed by 12 countries.This is in place to ensure that the Antarctic continent is used for peaceful purposes and no military activity can take place there. It also protects the Antarctic continent as being a scientific preserve. 45 countries have now signed this.
