    A Russian Clerk named Igor Gouzenko escaped the Soviet embassy in Ottowa with 109 documents proving the existenc of a Soviet spy ring in Canada. His actions helped to ignite the Cold War.

    A organization that promotes international peace and security
  • Nuremberg Trials

    These were a series of trilas to presecute the actions of the Holocaust in World War II. This was held by the allied forces against the political, military, and economic leaders of the Holocaust. This had to do with the Cold War by making the crimes of WWII surface.
  • Chinese Communist Revolution

    This was a period where Chinese Communist's Party was driven to power. This had benn coming since 1921. This impacted the Cold War by causing termoil in the east.
  • Baruch Plan

    This plan was a plan between the US, Canada and England to regulate atomic energy. This affected the Cold War by making it more peacful and not have to worry about countries dropping atomic bombs on each other.
  • Iron Curtain Speech

    This speech was the beginning of the blockade, aslo known as the "iron curtain". This was a speech made by Churchill and it was a blockade blocking them off the rest of the Eastern half of the world. This had a large part in the Cold War because of the fact that it shut the eastern countries off to stop war and commotion.
  • Truman Doctrine

    In a dramatic speech to a joint session of Congress, President Harry S. Truman asked for the U.S. assistance for Greece and Turkey to forestall communist domination of the two nations. Historians have often cited Truman's address, whcih became known as the Truman doctrine, as the official declaration of the Cold War.

    A broad program of economic aid offered originally to all European nations including communist countries. This aid was offered to all of Europe from America. This plan was put into order to try to stop communism. This affected the Cold War by slowing down the spread of communism in the eaat.

    The first major international crises of the Cold War. The Soviet Union blocked the Western Allie's railways, roads and canals which led to the secotrs of Berlin, controlled by the Allied Powers.

    A diplomatic and military confrontation between Egypt and the combined forces of Britain, France and Isreal. The United States, Soviet Union and the United Nations forced Britain, France and Isreal to withdraw. It ened on November 7th of 1956.

    A political sex scandal, Gerda Munsinger an alleged East German prostitute and Soviet spy living in Ottowa who had slept with many of the government's men.
  • Fidel Castro Takes Over Cuba

    Castro oragnized underground groups of rebels to overthrow Bastista, the man in power at the time. Castro and his men fought agaisnt Bastista's soldiers. Eventually, Castro was captured.
  • Cuba taken by Fidel Castro

    The Cuba takeover led many Cubans to move to Florida. Castro was not working with the communist party but the U.S. thought otherwise.
  • JFK becomes President

    This election caused tension between the United States and the Soviet Union. Kennedy defeated Vice President and Republican candidate Richard Nixon.
  • U2 Plane

    A summite in 1960 was canceled when the Soviets shot down an American U-2 spy plane, flying over the Soviet Union, capturing its pilot.
  • Bay of Pigs Invasion

    This was a failed United States CIA invasion of Cuba in an attempt to overthrow the left wing government of Fidel Castro.
  • Bay of Pigs

    Kennedy approved an invasion on the Cuban mainland by an anti-castro group invasion trained by the U.S. military. The improvised army landed on the Bay of Pigs in Cuba with the intent of igniting an uprising against Castro. This inflamed the Cold War, causing further problems between the U.S. and Soviet Union, as well as Cuba.
  • Berlin Wall

    A wall constructed by the Germans to seperate the democratic West Berlin and the communist East Berlin.
  • Cuban Missile Crisis

    A 13-Day confrontation between Cuba and the Soviet Union versus the United States. This is considered the closest event that almost caused a nuclear war. Russia aided Cuba on one condition that Cuba would let Russia us their country as a military base. Cuba complied and Russia prepared missiles to be fired at the United States. Negotiations took place and the crisis ended on October the 28th.
  • Nikita Khrushchev

    He purposed placing nuclear missiles in Cuba to restore the balance of power during the Cold War. He was also the First Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union from 1953-1964.
  • U.S. send troops to Vietnam

    The U.S. sent troops due to the Gulf of Tonkin incident in 1965. This escalated the Vietnamese conflict. they were stationed in South Vietnam to fight against the North. This affected the Colld War because it invoved us gettiing involved in a physical war, which the U.S. was attempting to avoid.

    After a period of high tension between Israel and the countries around it, a war began with Israel laucnhing surprise air strikes against Arab forces. Among them were Egypt, Jordan and Syria. The outcome had Isreal winning the war. By the surprise attacks and other things, the war only lasted six days. Also Israel ended up taking land off of the opposing countries,
  • Apollo 11

    Neil Armstrong wrote himself into the history books, being the first man to ever walk on the moon; Buzz Aldrin followed him onto the surface and with this, the U.S. officially led the Space Race against the Soviets. This further sparked competition with the Soviets.
  • SALT 1

    This was the first round of bilateral talks, which involved the countries America and Soviet Union. It had to do with the issue of armanent control. This affected the Cold War by trying to solve the conflict between the U.S. and the Soviets.
  • SALT 2

    The second round of bilateral talks between the Soviets and the United States. This leaded them to write START (Strategic Arms Redution Treaty), which was written in two treaties. This affected the Cold War by ending a lot of conflict between the two nations.
  • Leonid Brezhnev

    His government was in a competition with the United States to build up large stockpiles of nuclear weapons. He signed the SALT I agreement in 1972 to reduce nuclear arms he also met with US President Richard Nixon in 1973.
  • President Nixon Resignation

    He resigned in the face of almost certain impeachment after the watergate scandals.
  • Soviet Invasion of Afghanistan

    Russian paratroopers landed in Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan. The country was already in the civil war. The prime minsiter tried to keep Muslim tradition within the nation and he wanted more belief in the country. In December, the prime minister Amin, was shot by the Russians and was repaced by Babrak Kamal.
  • Iranian Revolution

    Iranian militants seized the U.S. embassy in Teheran and held sixty-six occupants as hostage, demanding the return of the shah from the U.S. After the shah's death in Egypt, an agreement was negotiated that freed the hostages on January 20th, 1981.
  • Afghanistan Proxy War

    A civil war broke in Afghanistan. The Soviets controlled the Democratic Republic of Afghanistan who fought the Afgan Rebels. The Soviets ended up pulling out and the war went on till the 90's.
  • Reagan reveals "Star Wars"

    Regan reveals his Strategic Defense Initiative known as star wars. With this, he hoped to develop technology to intercept nuclear missiles.
  • Berlin Wall is Destroyed

    The Berlin Wall was torn down as a symbol of freedom. It was not destroyed entirely on November 9th. People from all over West and East Berlin began to come to the wall throughout the week with sledgehammers and other tools to help bring down the division.
  • Operation Desert Storm

    This was the first major crisis which ocurred after the cold War. It ocurred in Iraq. Saddam Hussein ordered his army across the border into Kuwait. The U.S led an offensive against the Hussein's troops. After 42 days of fighting, Bush Sr. called a cease fire and most of Hussein's troops fled the country or died.
  • Soviet Collapse

    The Soviet Union fell apart in December of 1991. After the defeat of the Soviet Union speerated into 15 different countries. This triumph was a win for democracy over totalitarianism. This caused changes in politcal, economic and military alliances.
