    On Dec. 7,1941, the Japanese launched a surprise attack upon the U.S Pacific fleet at Pearl Harbpr, Hawaii. Two waves of Japanese warplanes sank several U.S. ships, including for battle ships. They also distroyed more than 180 U.S. aircraft. The Japanese killed more than 2,400 Americans and lost 100 of their own troops. The U.S, Canada, and United Kingdom declared war on Japan on Dec. 8, 1941.

    After the attack on Pearl Harbor, Hitler ordered submarines raids against ships along America's east coast. The German aim in the Battle of the Atlantic was to prevent food and war materials from reaching great Britain and the Soviet Union. Hiter knew if he cut that lifeline, Britain would starred into submission. In the first four months of 1942 the German sank 87 ships off the Atlantic shore.

For the first time since the Pearl Harbor, a Japanese invasion had been stopped and turned back.

    Germany's generals knew they were beaten, but Hitler pulled his resources together for one more assault. on Dec. 16, 1941, German troops surprised and overwhelmed the Americans in the Ardennes forest in Belgium and Luxembourg. The Germans lacked the troops and fuel to turn their thrust into a breakthrough. Within two weeks the Americans stopped the German advances near the Meuse river in Belgium.
