    Congresses passed the Immigration Act which denied immigrants that were poor, had mental illnesses, and were criminals. These people were seen as possible threats to the security of Americans.

    The United States got involved in a war in between Spain and Cuba. They entered stating that they would grant Cuba it's independence. It made a naval blocked for the Spanish attempting to reach Cuba.

    Manila, the capital of the Philippines, was under Spanish control. The U.S. defeated the Spanish. It was the first battle.

    This treaty allowed the independence of Cuba. It also gave the U.S. Guam, Puerto Rico, and the Philippines.

    John Hay articulated the Open Door Policy that that ensured that Western Powers could have the same access to the Chinese Market as the other large countries.
