After gold fell under what may be thought was the minimum about needed, the US fell into an economic depression. Investorscashed in for gold, the stock market fell, banks and businesses folded, and jobs were lost.

Pitted William McKinley and William Jennings Bryan against each other. McKinely opposed unlimited silver coinage, while Bryan supported bimetallism. Bryan gave the famous "Cross of Gold" speech.

McKinley won, with the most support from the northeastern states and wealthy businessmen. He also called out Bryan as a demogogue (someone who said what the people wanted just for the votes).
