    Economic Opportunity Act, 1964
    This was signed into law by Lyndon Johnson and included programs for his "Great Society". It was to promote health, education, and welfare for the poor. Although some of it's orignal programs have changed or been withdrawn, Head Start and Job Corps. are still operational today.
  • Volunteers In Service To America, 1964

    Volunteers In Service To America, 1964
    An anti-poverty program that increased efforts to aid residents in low income communities. Volunteers were encourage to join in the fight against poverty and serve their local communities. It was considered a domestic version of the Peace Corps.
  • Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965

    Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965
    This act was created to distribute funding to schools for primary and secondary education. It also provided more funding for low income school districts. Funds are authorized for professional development, instructional materials, special education resources and promotion of parental involvement. Today it is known as "No Child Left Behind".

    Established to promote progress in the humanities and arts of the United States. It also provided scholarships awards in cultural education to ensure a more well rounded society not just made up of math and science professionals.
  • Medicare, 1965

    Medicare, 1965
    Program designed to provide health insurance for individuals 65 and over. It was also an act to provide insurance for people with disabilities of any age. It was an amendment to existing social security legislation.
  • Medicaid, 1965

    This program was created through the Social Security Act. It is jointly funded by state and federal governments to provide health programs for low income adults and children. State involvment is voluntary, however, all states have participated since 1982.

    The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), 1965
    Expanded funding for existing federal housing programs. It also gave lower rents to elderly and disabled people. Veterans were also entitled to make low down payments in order to obtain a mortage to buy a home.
  • Immigration Act of 1965

    President Johnson signed this bill which allowed immigrants from the Eastern and Western Hemisphere to become citizens of the United States. It was an effort to welcome immigrants for their skills regardless of where they were born.
  • Water Quality Act

    Water Quality Act
    Prevented water pollution by requiring states to enforce water quality. Also created The Water Pollution Control Administration.
  • The National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act 1966

    The National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act 1966
    The Act created the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. It was put in place since more vehicles were on the roads and more deaths had taken place. Roads were improved and safety belts were now in all new cars.
  • Clean Water Restoration Act, 1966

    Clean Water Restoration Act, 1966
    Entitled the Secretary of Interior to cooperate with the Secretary of Agriculture to conduct comprehensive studies of water pollution. Also imposed a $100 fine per day on any pollutant who failed to submit their reports.
