  • Battle of Britain

    siteThis was the first major battle that was fought by just the air force and the largest aerial bombings in history. It was between Germany and the United Kingdom. Germany also failed in this battle.

    This was an idividual France government that took sides with the Axis group.

    Japan joined the Axis powers because they shared a dis-like for the Soviet Union and they had a similar government as the Axis countries.

    Hitler breaks non-agression agreement
    Hitler broke the non-agression pact with the Soviet Union in 1941. The pact was supposed to keep Germany and Russia from fighting, but Hitler wanted to expand to more land for an even greater win. Unfortunately, most of his attacks in Russia were failures.
  • FDR approves “shoot on sight”

    FDR ordered this to assure American safety. Although we were not in the war, a German submarine shot at the USS Greer, but did no damage. FDR felt it would be necessary to shoot back to keep the US ship safe. This was issued a few months before the US entered the war. site

    Japan issued a surprise attack on Pearl Harbor. Different waves of attacks occured between 6am until 9am. This was a devastating day for America that helped them join the war. website

    Germany and Italy declared war on the US because the US declared war on Japan. Since they were in an alliance with Japan, they had to attack the US also.

    The US is forced to leave the Philippines
    Even after Pearl Harbor, Japan had a strong army that caused the US forces to deteriorate. The fighting was rigorous and devastating in the Philippines. FDR took the troops out in order to prevent any more American causualities.

    site American and Filipino soldiers were forced to surrender to Japanese forces in Corregidor. They were taken prisoners where they had to walk in the scorching heat through the Philippine jungles. Many of the soldiers died, while the rest went to war camps.

    This was the first of Six aircraft battles near New Guinea. It was a loss for Japan, which weakened them in the Battle of midway.

    This was a major naval battle. The US used a surprise attack against Japan's most important fleet. It was successful and caused Japan to lose numerous battles after Midway.
  • Guadalcanal

    This lasted until Feb, 1943. It took place on the Guadalcanal islands. It showed that the American forces were more superior than the Japanese.
  • General Eisenhower and his forces land in North Africa

    It was not as successful as they wanted it to be.

    This lasted from July 17, 1942 until February 20, 1943. It was between Germany and the Soviet Union. Hitler's general Paulus surrendered when they were taken captive. This was a Soviet victory.

    The Allies captured Rome. Germany could not longer defend rome and had to back off, allowing the allies to free it.
  • D-Day

    D-Day
    On the beaches of Normandy, France. The Allies created an invasion on the coast. This would free the Europe coast from Germany. It was the turning point of the war that led to Germany's downfall.
  • MacArthur returns to Philippines

    MacArthur was an American general and field marshall of the Philippine army. After being forced out of the Philippines from a previous battle, he vowed to return, which he did. He promised to protect the philippines.
  • Battle of the Bulge

    Hitler hoped to gain control of the war back in the Battle of the Bulge. He had hoped to recover from D-Day. Hitler was proved wrong as the Americans fought the best battle they ever fought.
  • US flag raised on Mt. Suribachi

    This was a symbol of American victory over Mt. Suribachi, which was traditional Japanese territory. The US foces endured rough terrain conditions, along with many traps. The victory was easy for them. more info

    Truman became president after FDR suddenly passed away during his fourth term.

    Hitler was afraid of being caught by soviet forces. He and his girlfriend committed suicide in his bunker.

    This meant Victory in Europe. The Nazis had been defeated, and fighting stopped in Europe.

    Hiroshima was America's first target to drop the atomic bomb. The city was completely destroyed.
  • Nagasaki

    This was the second target for the American Atomic bomb. over thousands of people were killed or injured from the devastating bomb. It was nicknamed "fat boy."

    Japan was unable to contribute to the war due to lack of military and money and had to surrender. They agreed to all of the Allies' terms.
  • Japanese ambassadors arrive in Washington, DC to discuss Pacific island violations

    This conference was based in washington. The Allies wanted to make sure that no further conflicts would occur with Japan. The allied forces would be allowed to occupy Japan if they needed to. Japan also agreed to ban war and take more precautions.
