    At age 42 Rosa Parks refused to obey bus driver James Blake's order that she give up her seat to make room for a white passenger.

    Montgomery Bus Boycott

    The boycott lasted from December 1, 1955, when Rosa Parks, an African American woman, was arrested to December 20, 1956 when a federal ruling, Browder v. Gayle, took effect, and led to a United States Supreme Court decision that declared the Alabama and Montgomery laws requiring segregated buses to be unconstitutional.
  • Little Rock Nine Incident

    The nine black students attempt to enter Central High but are turned away by the National Guard.
  • Sputnik Launched

    The launch of Sputnik, the first artificial satellite, brought the dawn of the space age, and increased conflict between the United States and the U.S.S.R. The people of the United States had begun to feel as if they were unsurpassable in every aspect of life. However, the launch of Sputnik alarmed society and created a wide spread panic.
  • U-2 Incident

    When a United States U-2 spy plane was shot down over Soviet Union airspace the U.S. government government at first denied the plane's purpose and mission, but then was forced to admit its role as a covert surveillance aircraft. The incident was a great embarrassment to the United States and prompted a marked deterioration in its relations with the Soviet Union.
