    Japan finally surrendered and the war was officially over. THere was much destruction in many places. The U.S. would have a long few years ahead because there would need to be lots of money to rebuild the Nation. THis caused the movemnet into civil rights.

    Brown v. Board of Education
    The whole case started over a little black girl 2 years before because she was forced to walk one mile just to get to her school event though there was a school 7 blocks away. It was a white school. The whole case was about how Brown thought that school segragation was unconstitutional and should be outlawd. In the end, Brown won the case
  • Rosa Parks Incident

    Rosa Parks Incident
    Rosa Parks is famous for refusing to give up her us seat to a white man. However, she was arrested for no reason. She had every reason to refuse to give up her seat because she was sitting where blacks are forced to sit. The white man had explained to the driver that there were no more seats, so the driver told him to sit where Rosa was because she was closest to the white section. She did no wrong because she was sitting where she was supposed to and had no reason to give up the seat.

    Montgomery Bus Boycott

    The Montgomery Bus Boycott was when blacks from Montgomery, Alabama decided to boycott city buses until they could sit anywhere they wanted, instead of having to sit in the back when there was whites aboard. In the end of the huge boycott, the Supreme Court ruled that segregation on city buses was unconstitutional.

    Little Rock Nine Incident
    On the first day of school at Central High, a mob of whites showed up to prevent the blacks from entering. Even Governor Orval Faubus and the Arkansas National Guard were apart of it as well. Every day this occured. On September 23, they found a way to get the kids in through a side door. There were court cases all the time about this situation. In the end the first African American to graduate from Central High was Ernest Green.

    Sputnik Launched
    The Soviet Union launched the Sputnik 1, which as the world's first artificial satellite that was about the size of a beach ball. However, the public feared that if the Soviet's ability to launch the satellites also could mean that they could launch ballistic missiles that carried nuclear weapons from Europe to the U.S.

    U-2 Incident
    On May 1, 9160, a CIA piolet was shot down by a Soviet missile. The pilot's name was Francis Gary Powers and he had been on a top secret mission, which was to fly over and photograph denied territory from his U2 plane deep inside Russia.
  • Bay of Pigs Invasion

    Bay of Pigs Invasion
    In 1961 the United States launched an attack on Cuba to overthrow Castro's government. Previously, on March 17, 1961, President Eisenhower agreed to make a plan to overthrow Castro's government. Then when Kennedy became president he decided to continue the attack. The purpose was to take a beachhead, establish a government, and gain U.S recognition. The attack started with an air raid. The U.S destroyed several Cuban planes. In the end 200 invaders killed compared with 156 Cubans killed.

    Cuban Missile Crisis

    The Cuban Missile Crisis was the closest the world ever came to a nuclear war. Cuba begab building missiles secretly. When the secret got out the Soviet's denied making missiles. Kennedy made a TV address where he confronted the Soviet's and he said he would take the situation as if the Soviet'sand would be reguarded to properly. On Oct. 28 Khrushchev announced that he would dismantle the installations and would not invade Cuba.

    Letter From Birmingham Jail
    The letter was written by Martin Luther King Jr. while in the Birmingham Jail. He was arrested for his part in the Birmingham campaign. King wrote the letter to some clergymen he knew. The clergymen did not agree with his way of protesting or his actions.The clergymen thought his demonstrations were "unwise and untimely." Kings's letter was a response that was full of the powerful truth. He states that one day he knows that freedom will reign for every man and woman and every race.

    March on Washington
    The March on Washington attracted around 250000 people for a peaceful demonstration to promote civil rights. The media even broadcasted it on TV. Several organizations like the SNCC, Martin Luther King Jr., NAACP, SCLC, and many others. It was a life changing event that brough hope to many blacks.
