  • Dien Bien Phu

    Vietnamese forces took over and occupied the command post of Dien Bien Phu. The French were defeated by the Viet Minh communist revolutionaries. This battle lasted 55 days.
  • Creation of the Ho Chi Minh Trail

    The trail ran from North Vietnam towards South Vietnam. This was created to suppy the Vietcong that were in South Vietnam.
  • The United States becomes actively involved

  • First major battle of Vietnam War for American Units

    When the US figured out there was an attack that was going to heppen on US Marine base at Chu Lai. The US launched Operation Starlite and the US was victorious.
  • Operation Junction City

    In one of the largest air-mobile assaults ever, 240 helicopters sweep over the Tay Ninh province, which was the start of Operation Junction City. The goal of this was to destroy the Vietcong bases and the Vietcong military headquarters. Over 30,000 US troops took part in this mission.

    In the hamlet of My Lai a US company kills about 200 citizens.

    President Nixon signes off on Operation Menu bombing North Vietnam and Vietcong forces in Cambodia.

    All but 133,000 of the US troops have come home, leaving the rest of the ground war to the South Vietnam Army, now with over 1,000,000 enlisted.
