Fist Public Display

1890

This is the first time public appearances of films started to happen. The first theatre was built in Philadelphia This lead film companies to build more theatres around.

the Great Train Robbery

1903

Edison corporation produced the first western film to be made. This was also the first American action film. It was produced by shots and editing. This made growing popularity in story and action films realistically.

Jazz Singer

1927

This movie/film was the first feature-length talkie. A talkie is a movie featuring a soundtrack in it. This ended the silent film era.

Technicolor

1935

A film released where audiences could now see films in technicolor. This is a process of color cinematography using synchronized monochrome films. Two-color film technology had been available, but rarely used since 1922.

McCarthyism

1948

McCarthyism threatened Hollywood for using communism. The Hollywood Ten refused to divulge any communist leanings and were imprisoned for contempt of court. They later came out with Guilt of Suspension.

Wide Screen

1953

Wide screen is a new way movie can be seen on the TV. New widescreen processes to produce bigger and more exciting films were the answer. It gives it more of a more immersive view experience.

First 3-D Film

3D films are motion pictures made to give an illusion of three-dimensional view, usually with the help of special glasses to see it with. The first 3-D film, relying upon stereoscopic technology, achieved wide release.

Motion Picture Ratings

Picture ratings are ways movies can be categorized into certain age groups of people. This made it so children cant watches certain movies. It also gave people warning of what and how movies would be.

Introduction of the Steadicam

1976

The Steadicam, first used in Rocky, became available offering new options to filmmakers. Steadicam is a lightweight mounting for a movie camera that keeps it steady for filming when handheld or moving. It makes it where you can see the movie more clearly without a lot of movement.

Film at home

1980

Movies started to get watched more with VSRs at the time. Legal actions started to take place when people tried to make copyrights of a movie. People now get fined if anyone knows about it.

Home Entertainment Revenues Exceeded Box Office

2003

For the first time, home entertainment revenues exceeded the box office. The DVD took over for the video cassette.

Growth of 3D films

2010

With improving technology, 3D films became more popular. In addition, a number of new IMAX facilities, offering larger format screens were constructed. Today, many large-budget films can be watched in 2D or 3D.
