    Koean Conflict.
    North and South Korea where divided along the 38th parallel of latitude. However in summer 1950 North coria invade South Korea U.S and Korean forced halt the attack around Pusan. Then Fall 1950 South Korea brakes out and advances to the Yalu River. Then Chinese ad North Koreans push south coria back to the 37th parallel. Then in 1951-1953 UN forces advance to the 38th parallel which ends in a long stalemate.
  • NATO

    NATO
    United states, Canada, and ten other countries formed a new military alliance called the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). Members pledged to help one another if any one of them where attacked.
  • Chinese Civil War

    By the end of WW2, the Chinese Communists ad gained control of much of northern China. The communists where being led by Mao Zedong. Mao Zedong triumphed for Meany reasons but the most important being that he gained the peoples support and trust. Mao then created Collectivization farms. Then from 1958 to 1960 Mao led a program known as the great leap forward. But it failed. Around 55 million Chinese starved to death.

    Arms RaceBy 1949, howver, the Soviet Union had also developed nuclear wepons. ALso by 1953, both sides had developed hydrogen bombs, wich are mutch more destrictive. People argued that the nuclear war would destroy both sides. Both sides engaged in a race to match eachothers new wepons.So the Americans strategy was something called Detente. It was created to ease tension threw a series of agreements.

    Communist Cuba and Missile Crisis
    A man named Fidel Castro organized an armed rebellion against the corrupt dictator who ruled Cuba at the time. He was successful. The United States wanted to bring down the communist regime. Then in 1962 the Soviet Union sent nuclear missiles to Cuba. So the U.S. created a naval blockade to prevent any more Soviet shipments. U.S. demanded Russia to withdraw all nuclear weapons from Cuba and after big tension Russia took them back.

    The soviet responded by forming its own military alliance called the Warsaw Pact. It included the Soviet Union and seven satelites in Eastern Europe.

    The wall was a massive concrete barrier, topped with barbed wire and patrolled by guards. Bernin was the key focus of the cold war tensions. The City was split into democratic West Berlin, and communist East Berlin. Meany people died trying to get past the wall.

    When Eastern Europeanns opposed communist rule. Revolts had erupted in Poland, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, and elswre in the 1950’s. After meay proteasts finally in 188 and 1999 under great presser communist government allowed greater freedoms. Later Unification with east and west berlin accured. Also other things led later to freedom of most Eastern Eropean countrys.

    The Soviet economy faced sever problems. Collectivized agriculture became very unproductive. Its command economy could not match with the western market. The Soviet Union had to import grain just to feed its people.

    Soviets in Afghanistan
    The Soviet Union became involved in a long war in Afghanistan. The Soviets supported Afghan government and had tried to modernize the nation. But the Afghans believed that it threatened Islamic tradition. So Warlords took up arms against the Soviets. The Soviets had trouble battling them because of their Gorilla like warfare.
