  • World War I

    World War I
    Lasted from 1914-1918
    Political instability in the Balkins threatened to destroy agreements between European powers, Ottoman Empire, Russia, and other parties. This eventually led to this war.
    U.S. joined in 1917
    By 1918, the central powers were unraveling at all fronts. From October-November, of the same year, each territory surrendered.
  • Worldwide Influenza

    Worldwide Influenza
    Also known as the Spanish Flu, Great Influenza Epidemic, or 1918 Influenza Pandemic
    It was first introduced to the U.S. from military personnel
    By 1920, nearly 20 million were dead. In the U.S. 500,000 perished.
  • 19th Amendment

    19th Amendment
    The right of citizens of the U.S. to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the U.S. or by any State on account of sex.

  • The Great Depression

    The Great Depression
    The Great Depression began with the stock market crash of 1929 and was made worse by the 1930s Dust Bowl.
    This in turn causes consumer and investment spending to drop. Steep declines in industrial output occurred, and employment dropped because failing companies laid off workers.
    By 1933, 15 million Americans were unemployed and nearly half the country's banks had failed.
  • Franklin Roosevelt is Inaugurated

    Franklin Roosevelt is Inaugurated
    Many bills were passed in order to create economic stability and jobs. Of these passed bills, the New Deal was most important. It was a series of programs, public work projects, financial reforms, and regulations enacted between 1933-1939.
    President Roosevelt also brought an end to prohibition. Legalizing the consumption of alcohol helped create jobs and stimulate the economy.
  • World War II

    World War II
    The beginning of WWII started out as Hitlers quest to total domination. As time went on, the war grew and was much more than Hilter could have imagined.
    In 1941, 260 Japanese aircrafts attacked Pearl Harbor in Hawaii, taking the lives of more than 2,300 troops. This attack lead to the U.S joining the war.
    Truman authorized the use of a new and devastating weapon, the atomic bomb. The bomb was dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki early August. By mid August Japan issued a formal surrender.
  • Vietnam War

    Vietnam War
    Prolonged conflict between Communist forces of North Vietnam, Backed by China and the USSR, and non-communist forces of South Vietnam, backed by the U.S.
    North Vietnamese torpedo boats attack U.S. destroyer in Gulf of Tonkin. Congress authorizes President Johnson to take any measures necessary to defend U.S. forces and prevent further aggression.
    U.S. planes begin bombing raids of North Vietnam.
    South Vietnamese government surrenders to North Vietnam; U.S. embassy Marines are evacuated.
  • Brown vs Board

    Brown vs Board
    Linda Brown, a third grader, was required by law to attend a school for black children in her hometown of Topeka, Kansas. Linda walked 6 blocks, crossing dangerous railroad tracks, and then boarded a bus that took her to Monroe Elementary. Only 7 blocks from her home was an elementary school attended by white children, and Linda was not welcome. The Browns filed a law suit on the school district. In 1954 the Supreme Court ruled that racial segregation in public schools was unconstitutional.
  • I Have a Dream

    I Have a Dream
    Martin Luther King Jr., delivers his "I Have a Dream" speech in front of a crowd of 200,000 people. This was during the Civil Rights march in Washington, DC.
    In his speech, King called for civil and economic rights and an end to racism in the U.S.
  • Landed on the Moon

    Landed on the Moon
    On July 16th, 1969 astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin, became the first men to land on the moon. Apollo 11 the spaceflight that first landed humans on the moon.
