    Sarah Knox Taylor, the daughter of future president Zachary Taylor and Margaret Mackall Smith Taylor, was born at Fort Knox. Sarah met Jefferson Davis while he and her dad were stationed together. Her father opposed the relationship because there was some friction between Davis and himself. The couple went to see Davis' sister in West Feliciana Parish, Louisiana. Either on the journey or soon after their arrival, both Davis and Sarah contracted yellow fever or malaria and died.

    Before the U.S. declared war on Mexico, General Zachary Taylor defeated a Mexican force in the Battle of Palo Alto north of the Rio Grande River.Tenssion with Mexico had begun a year earlier when the U.S. annexed the Republic of Texas as a new state. Mexicans had fought an unsuccessful war with Texans to keep them from breaking away to become an independent nation. They refused to recognize the independence of Texas. The war ended in September of 1847.

In result, he ordered Taylor to stand fast in northeastern Mexico. To support Scott's operation, Taylor's army was stripped of the bulk of its forces. Learning that Taylor's command had been reduced, Santa Anna marched north with 22,000 men, atcacking at the Battle of Buena Vista.Santa Anna suffered heavy losses.
