    Hundreds of Japanese planes attacked an American base at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. The fight lasted 2 hours, but more than 2,000 soldiers and sailors died and almost 1,000 were wounded. Only one day later, President Roosevelt asked congress to declare war on Japan. And 3 days later, Japanese allies Germany and Italy declared war on the United States. More than two years after this conflict, America was finally involved in World War ll.

    After the attack on Pearl Harbor, President Franklin D. Roosevelt asked congress to declare war on Japan. Congress passed the movement and on December 8, 1941 the U.S. declared war on Japan. Although three days after Congress approved his movement Japan, Germany, and Italy all declared war on the United States.

  • Bataan Death March

    Bataan Death March
    After the U.S. surrender of the Bataan Peninsula on the main Philippine island of Luzon to the Japanese, 75,000 Filipino and American troops were forced to make a march to prison camps. The marchers were treated terribly by the Japanese guards and were forced to walk through intense weather. Thousands had died in this terrible march that soon became known as The Bataan Death March.

    Also known as the Battle of Normandy, June 1944-August 1944, resulted in Allied liberation of Western Europe from the Nazi control. This battle began on June 6, 1944, also known as D-Day, 156,000 American, British, and Canadian forces landed on beaches along the coast of France's Normandy region. The allies had conducted a deception campaign to mislead the Germans about their invasion. By early spring the Allies had defeated the Germans.

    Battle of Iwo Jima
    This battle started near the Japanese coast. It was followed by air and naval chaos, three of the U.S. marine divisions landed on the island in Feb. Iwo Jima was defended by more the 23,000 Japanese army and navy troops that fought through caves, dugouts, tunnels, etc. Despite how difficult this situation may have been the marines wiped out the defending forces and after a month of fighting, the U.S flag was able to rise in victory

    U.S. drops atomic bomb on Japan
    The U.S. was the only nation to use atomic weapons during war when they dropped an atomic bomb on the city of Hirshima. Since the 1940's, the U.S. had been conducting a successful atomic bomb. Once they had successfully made on, in July of 1945, Germany had already been defeated. BUT the Pacific war with Japan was continuing. The bomb killed 80,000 people, 10,000 more died from wounds/ radiation poisoning.
