    Germany's Invasion of Poland
    On September 1, 1939, 1.5 million Nazi German troops invaded Poland which was the act that started World War 2. The nazi leader, Adolf Hitler claimed that it was a defensive action.

    On December 7, 1941, hundreds of Japanese fighter planes attacked the American Naval base at Pearl Harbor. The day after the assault, President Franklin D. Roosevelt asked congress to declare war on Japan. Three days later, Japanese allies, Germany, and Italy also declared war on the United States. More than 2 years into the conflict, America finally joined WWII.

  • Battle of Midway

    Battle of Midway
    Four Japanese aircraft severely damaged the US base on midway early in the morning of June fourth. The US carrier forces were actually ready for the attack and was prepared for battle. When the Japanese aircraft were heading back, they found US carriers were in the area with them. US attacked leaving only one carrier survived. The Japanese originally wanted to attack Midway and use it as a Base for when they attack Pearl Harbor, to dominate the US.

    Operation Torch was the British-American invasion in North Africa. It was the first and the only operation in the war where the Allied commander thought that their opponents would not be resisting.
  • Allied Invasion of Italy

    On September 3, 1943, Montgomery’s 8th army began its invasion on the Italian mainland and the Italian government agreed to surrender to the Allies. by the terms of the agreement, the Italians would be treated with leniency if they aided the allies in expelling the Germans from Italy.

  • D-Day (Normandy Invasion)

    D-Day stands for Day Day. D-Day is the day when American troops arrived in Germany to attack and demolish. Hitler knew that America was going to attack although he did not know when. He expected the invasion to be earlier in the year. D-Day was originally set for the day before, June 5, but because of a storm, it was moved to the 6th.
  • Liberation of Concentration Camps

    Soviet soldiers were the first to liberate concentration camp prisoners in the final stages of the war. On July 23, 1944, they entered the Majdanek camp in Poland, and later overran several other killing centers. On July 27, 1945, they entered the Auschwitz and there found hundreds of sick and exhausted prisoners.

    It was a German offensive intended to drive a wedge between the American and British armies in France and the Low Countries and recapture the port of Antwerp in The Netherlands to deny the Allies use of the port facilities. The allied won the battle.

    The war started from the need for a base near the japanese coast, Iwo Jima was defended by roughly 23,000 japanese army and navy troops, who fought from an elaborate network of caves, dugouts, tunnels, and underground installations.

    This battle involved 287,000 troops of the U.S. Tenth Army against 30,00 soldiers of the Japanese.
  • FDR Death- Truman Becomes President

    Franklin Roosevelt passed on this day after four terms,he had a back pain and collapsed unconscious. Which left Vice President Harry S. Truman to be president.
  • VE Day

    On this day Great britain and the United States celebrate victory in europe, when the German troops throughout Europe finally laid down their Soviet enemies, after the latter had lost more than 8,000 soldiers.
  • Postdam Declaration

    The Potsdam declaration issued on July 26 freed the first ray of hope with its statement that Japan would not be “enslaved as a race, nor destroyed as a nation.”
