Germany invaded Poland. The Polish military forces were not ready when the Germans attacked. Britain and France declared war on Germany and World War II began.

Franklin roosevelt persuaded Congress to pass an act. it was called the Lend-Lease Act. It granted the U.S. permission to market or let other countries borrow war goods if the president thinks it is important for U.S. safety.

On this day Japan began a surprise attack at Pearl Harbor. Their target was the U.S. Naval fleet. President Franklin Roosevelt asked Congress to announce war on Japan, one day after the attack. They did, and three days after Italy and Germany declared war against the U.S.
