HItler began to enter politics. In 1921 he joined the German Workers Party. By the summer, he had become the leader and renamed it the National Socialist German Workers Party (Nazi Party).

In the summer of 1935 the Nazi announced these new racial laws in Nuremberg. These laws excluded jews from German citizenship and did not allow Jews and Germans to marry eachother. Later these laws made all Jews have to wear a yellow star and carry a identification card.

The Kristallnacht was a violent phase of anti jewish activity. The Nazi burned Synagogues and destroyed thousands of jewish businesses. Hundreds of jews were killed and thousands were sent to concentration camps.

In this pact the German and Soviets promised not to attack each other. Hitler offered Stalin control of eastern Poland and Baltic states. Hitller was expecting to attck the Soviet Union and did not care what he had promised them.

Japan needed oil and scrap that it was recieving from the U.S. Japan saw these possible sanctions as a threat. Japan put thier supplies at risk and thew a suprised attack on U.S and southeast Asia.

The attack on peal harbor encouraged more people to support the war. The U.S, European nations, and Nationalist China joined together to defeat Japan. On December 8, the U.S declared war of Japan and enters the war.

The battle of Midway Island is the turning point of the war in Asia. The U.S plans destroy 4 Japanese aircraft carriers. They defeat the Japanese navy and have a naval advantage in the Pacific.

Battle of StalingradThis is considered the most terrible battle of the war. The soviets had a counterattack on Germany. The German troops were haulted, their supply lines were cut off, and it was all in the wInter. The Germans didn't have the supplies and clothes they needed to survive in winter conditions. What was suppose to be the best German troops were gone.

The U.S and Britsih troops land on the Normandy beaches. The troops fought their way through underwater mines, wires, and machine guns firing continuously at them. They even broke through German defensive lines. This has become one of the greatest naval invasions.

After Hitlers suicide on April 30, the German commanders decide to surrender. This ended the war in Europe.

Harry S. Truman had an important decsion to make. He wanted the war to end and a way to defeat Japan. He decided to drop bombs at Hiroshima and three days later at Nagasaki.

Japans surrender ends the war. 17 million lives were lost at battle and 20 million innocent people died. This deadly war brought an estimated 50 million deaths.
