World War II timeline

  • Kristallnacht

    A seventeen year old boy angry by the fact that his father was deported shot an employee of the German Embassyin paris. When the Nazi leaders heard of this, the attacked the jewish community by destroying their homes, synagogues, and buisnesses. They killed about 100 Jews and the streets were covered in shattered glass which lead to the word Kristallnacht meaning "night of broken glass."
  • Alliance with Italy and Germany

    An alliance was formed between Italy and Germany. The alliance included Japan also, however, they were focused more on the Soviet Union.
  • Germany invades Poland

    Germany invades Poland
    On september 1st 1939 Germanys used their first test of the new military strategy called blitzkreig meaning "lightning war" on poland in attept to invade Poland. German war planes invaded Polish air space by dropping bombs. While this was happeneing many troops and tanks stormed the ground.
  • Soviet Union invades East Poland

    Stalin sent soviet troops to occupy East Poland because of a secret agreement with Hitler.
  • France Surrenders

    France was trapped with their backs to sea. The Germans trapped the allied forces in the city Lille.
  • Lend Lease Act

    The president of the United States sould leand or lease arms and other supplies to any country vital to the U.S.
  • Battle of Britain

    Battle of Britain
    Hitler decided to call off his attacks because he was focused on Eastern Europe and the Mediteranean sea. The allies learned that Hitlers advances could be blocked.
  • German invasion of Soviet Union

    The Soviet Union was not prepared for Hitlers attack. The Germans pushed farther and farther into the land, the Russians however,burned everything in the Germans path. The Russains ended up held their ground while the Germans retreated.
  • Atlantic Charter

    The U.S. was not in war yet in the war, Rosevelt and Churchill met in secret on a battleship off the coast of Newfoundland. They created a joint declaration that upheld free trade amoung thier nations and also gave people the right to choose their own government. This was later used as a peace plan at the end of world war two.
  • Pearl Harbor

    American sailors in Hawaii were awoken by the explosives signaling a Japanese attack. The U.S. was not aware that this was taking place until it occured, causing most of the pacific fleet to be destroyed. 1,000 american soldiers were wounded and there were anout 2,400 fatalities.
  • Japanese Internment (U.S.)

    The bombing of Pearl Harbor caused fear on most Americans during that time period which lead mistrust in Japanese-Americans. They were seen as the enemy so Rosevelt put every Japanese American in internment camps.
  • Battle of Midway

    Japan was targeting and American airfeild in Midway because a Japanese code was broken. The U.S. knew a large force of planes was headed towards them. American carrier planes attacked the Japanese ships that contained many planes.
  • Allied invasion of Italy

    Rosevelt and met at Casablanca, Morocco. They came to an agreement that they would attack italy first. An allied force of 180,000 soldiers landed in Sicily and captured it from Italian and German troops.
  • D-Day

    The invasion force was ready with thousands of tanks, planes, ships, landing craftand 3.5 million troops. France and the Germans knew they were going to attack but did not know where the allies set up a dummy army. The dummy army attacked the French seaport.
  • German Surender

    The soviet union surrounded Berlin. Hitler knew that the end was coming so he got married to the love of his life. Two days later they both killed themselves. Hitler wrote a letter saying that the Jews started the war. One month after Hitlers death the German military surrendered.
  • The bombing of Hiroshima

    After the Japanese didn't have a reaction to Trumans threat to drop bombs, the U.S. decided to drop an atomic bomb causing 73,000 casualties.
  • Bombing of Nagasaki

    After dropping an atomic bomb in Hiroshima, the U.S. dro[ped a second atomic bomb in Nagasaki. About 37,000 people died.
  • Japanese surrender

    Due to the two atomic bombs dropped by the U.S. in Japan, they surredered to general Douglas MacArthur. This ended the war.
