    Japan invades China. Japan wanted to expand. The Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor and China joined the allied powers. This war started out as the second Sino-Japanese War. This is the largest asian war of the 20th century.

    This is the pact of non-aggression between the Soviet Union and Germany. They did this so they could expand easier. The result was the birth of the axis powers. This put dread into the hearts of anyone in the middle of them and the rest of the world because the Soviet Union and Germany were both ruled by a dictator.

    Germany invaded Poland by use of overwhelming force and created the war style called blitzkreig. It happened because Germany wanted to expand its rule.     15 Nazi officials met in the Wannsee district outside of Berlin. They discussed ways that they could get rid of the Jews in Europe. They made a goal to remove 11 million Jews from Europe no matter the cost.

    Midway is an island halfway between Asia and North America. The Americans broke the Japanese codes and got their battle plans. This gave the Americans an advantage over the Japanese. They were able to surprise the Japanese by placing aircraft carriers to attack the Japanese aircraft carriers.

    Battle of Stalingrad
    Hitler wanted to advance to Stalingrad because of its location on Volga river and it being a transportation hub and a major industrial city. It would give the Germans a strategic advantage over the Russians on the Caucasus mountians. It was a bloody battle with both sides losing many people. The Russians lost over 2 million people in this battle.

    167 British civilians were killed as the result of a German bombing. So the British decided to drop bombs on Hamburg, Germamy. They used a new jamming device called " Window" to go undetected by the Germans. Over 30,000 people died and 280,000 buildings were destroyed.

    American, British, and Canadian forces arrived at 5 beaches along the coast of France's Normandy region. They had over 150,000 soldiers. Germany was trying to take over Britian and they decided to fight back. The Allies won and this was the turning point of the war.

    Hitler wanted to attack the Allies after D-day so they launched a major attack. It took place in the Ardennes Forest of Belgium. Germany used over 200,000 troops and about 1,000 tanks to break through the U.S troops. The Americans were not prepared and thousands of soldiers were killed.

    The Allies wanted to destroy the Eastern German Communication Centers to prevent the Germans from moving eastward. 3300 tons of bombs were dropped on the city of Dresden. The Allies About 35,000 Germans were dead by the end of the battle. Also the city of Dresden was completely destroyed.

    The Americans fought around 23000 Japanese soldiers during the battle of Iwo Jima. The US needed a base near the Japanese coast. After preparing, the US Marine landed on the island in February 1945. The Japanese fought from networks of caves and dugouts. The US came out to be victorious after a month of fighting.

    The Battle of Okinawa was on the Pacific Island. It was the last and biggest battle of World War II.The USA had 287,000 soldiers and the Japanese had 130,000. The Japanese air bases were at stake. 77,000 soldiers were lost to Japan and 15,000 to the Allies by the eighty-second day.

    After Germany lost 8000 soldiers, they surrendered to their Soviet Antagonist.The US and Great Britan celebrated this day. Russians took more than 2 million captives after the battle in Czechoslovakia.

    Dropping of the Atomic Bombs
    The US was devolping an atomic weapon after they were warned about Germany researching nuclear waepons. They tested the atomic bomb in New Mexico in July of 1945. They wanted to end the war fast so they dropped it in Hiroshima. It killed 80000 people instantly. Three days after that, the US droped another one in Nagasaki. That killed 40000 people. Japan surrenderd a few day later.

    Japan surrendered on that day. It stands for Victory over Japan Day.
