  • Japan attacks Pearl Harbor

    -Japan launches 2 full blown surprise attacks on the harbor in Hawaii
    -2400 U.S military and civilians lose their lives
    -Another 1178 U.S military and civilians are injured
    -in total 18 ships and 350 planes are wither sunk or damaged
  • United States declares war on Japan

    -just one day after the attack on Pearl Harbor the United States declares war on Japan
    -With this decleration they have now entered World War II
  • Germany and Italy declare war on the United States

    -3 days after the United States declared war on Japan, thier allies then declare war on the United States
    -Every country had their different allies depending on what side you were on
    -You were either on the Allies side or on the Axis Powers side

    Battle of the Coral Sea

    -Prior to this battle the Japanese were taking over the Pacific
    -U.S and Australia stop Japan from invading
    -Japan wins the actual battle but for the first time the Allies stop the invasion
    -U.S begins using Island Hopping technique

    -Admiral Chester Nimitz intercepted Japanese code
    -U.S launches surprise attack on Japan at Pacific island named Midway
    -U.S wins battle

    Battle of Stalingrad

    -Battle of Stalingrad started due to the Germans violating the nonaggression pact with the Soviet Union and attacking
    -Hitler wanted to capture the Soviets Oil fields
    -The Germans controlled 90% of the citty but then the winter hit and the Soviets used this to their advantage and won the battle
    -Even though they won the Soviets lost 1,100,000 people
    -This battle is know as the turning point in the WWII
  • Normandy Invasion (D Day)

    -At this time the Soviet Union was oushing into Poland and other Allies were moving North into Italy
    -150,000 Allied troops invaded
    -Attacked along a 60 mile stretch and was the largest land-sea-air operation in history
    -600 warships involved and 11000 planes
    -around 5,000 U.S deaths
  • France freed from Nazi Control

    -Due to the D-Day attacks the troops that got through were able to help free France and drive Germany out of France

    -German tanks broke throgh U.S lines in Belgium while they were trying to capture Antwerp
    -Germans were winning to start but ended up losing in a very close battle
    -120,000 Germans died along with 600 tanks and 1600 planes

    -Roosevelt, Stalin and Churchill met in Yalta to discuss post WWII
    -At this meeting they set up the Unnited Nations

    -Island is critical for U.S win

    -U.S wins battle with 6000 deaths opposed to Japans 26800 deaths

    -This was Japans last defensive stronghold
    -Japan used 1900 Kamikaze attacks
    -110,000 Japanese troops died
    -7600-12500 U.S troops died
    -The United States ended up winning the battle

    -United States go through a grieving period
    -The Vice-President, Harry S. Truman takes over as President
  • The end of Hitler

    -Hitler and Eva Braun commit suicide by gun shot and cyanide
    -Their bodies are burned

    -Hitler is on the cover of Time Magazine with a big X on his face

    -General Eisenhower accepts a surrender by the Third Reich
    -V-E day stands for Victory in Europe day
    -this concludes the first part of the War

    -Truman, Churchill and Clement Atlee and Stalin meet in Potsdam,Germany.
    -Meet to draw up the blueprint on how to disarm Germany and eliminate the Nazi's
    -They divided Germany up into four parts controlled by France, Britain, U.S and the Soviet Union
    -They also set up the Nnuremburg Trials to persecute Nazi leaders
  • Hiroshima

    -Known as the "little boy'"
    -In as little as 43 seconds the entire city collapsed to dust
  • Nagasaki

    -Known as the "Fat Man"
    -Leveled half of the city with one explosion

    U.S Occupation of Japan

    -Similar trials held for Japanese war criminals
    -7 out of 28 leaders were found guilty and sentenced to death, this was including Tojo
  • V-J Day

    -On this day Japan offers unconditional surrender
    -Victory in Japan Day (Formal surrender)

    Nuremberg Trials

    -International tribunal court tries Nazis officials
    -12 of the 22 defendants are sentenced to death
    -200 other oficials found guilty but given lesser sentences
