World War 2 Events

  • Rise of Facism and Nazism

    Hitler rises to power in Germany allowing for facism and the Nazi powers to rise.
  • Neutrality Act

    Announced as a policy by the United States as a response to the growing tensions in Asia and Europe. The US would stay out of war until the Japanese Act on Pearl Harbor.
  • Germany's Expansion and Annexation of Austria

    Germany and Austria sign a deal for Austria to become part of Germany empire. Most Austrians agree with deal and leads to Hitler attempting to conquer more countries which leads to World War II.
  • Signing of Non-Agression Pact

    Signed between Adolf Hitler of Germany and Josef Stalin of the Soviet Union promising non military action between the two sides. Their had been tension between the two sides but this appeared to elimnate it for the time.
  • Blitzkrieg Attack on Poland

    Lightning War against Poland in an effort to split it in half with the Soviet Union. The Germans were sucessful in taking control of the western half.
  • Battle of Britain

    The air battle over Britain between British and German forces. It was only limited to air battles because the German army could not advance to England.
  • Lend-Lease Act

    Enacted by President Roosevlelt and helped supploes Great Britain before US came into war. Was the US's way of helping the British while under the Neutrality Acts.
  • Bombing of Pearl Harbor

    The Japanese attack the US Naval Base at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. This causes large amounts of damage to the US fleet and brings America into the war.
  • Transition of the US home front to war production

    While men went off to fight in the war, women got jobs in the factory producing weapons needed for the war. The rise in employment finally brought the US out of the Great Depression.
  • Battle of Midway

    A crucial naval battle in the Pacific. The US fleet held off an attacking fleet of Japanese ships.
  • Battle of Stalingrad

    Nazi Germany fights the Soviet Union for control of the city. Soviets win and it's considered the turning point of the war.
  • Invasion of Africa by Eisenhower

    The American-British invasion of North Africa trying to reduce the pressure on Soviet Troops from the Germans. It was a way of trying to regain control in the Mediterrean Sea area.
  • D-Day

    The Allied forces arrive on land in Europe freeing France from Nazi control and leading to advance toward Berlin and downfall of Hitler.
  • Liberation of Majdanek

    Soviet forces liberate the concentration camp. It was the first of many camps to be liberated by the Allied forces.
  • Battle of the Bulge

    A German suprise attack against Allied forces. However, the Germans had the heaviest of losses.
  • Battle of Iwo JIma

    The arrival of United States froces and capture of two island in Japan. Comprised of some of the bloodiest battles in the Pacific.
  • Battle of Okinawa

    Largest assualt of the Pacific during the war. Both Japan and the Allies suffered large amounts of casualties.
  • Victory in Europe Day

    The end of the war in Europe after the surrender of the Nazi's.
  • Bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki

    The US drops atomic bombs on major Japanese cities causing horrible damage and forcing Japan to surrender.
  • Victory over Japan Day

    Japan surrender marking the end of World War II. This comes just days after US dropped atomic bombs on the Japanese.
