  • Russian Communist Revolution

    Russian Communist Revolution
    This marked the end of imperial rule and put social and political changes into effect to create the soviet union. Western Europe viewed Russia as an undeveloped, backward, society. This emancipation of serfs influenced events Russian revolution by giving peasants more freedom to organize. This is how the Soviet union came about and communism really became a big deal.
  • League of Nations

    League of Nations
    The League of Nations was created after WWI to solve disputes internationally, however, it failed. The United Nations was then created to take its place. It later became a battleground between communist and anti-communist countries. This relates to the cold war because different nations were fighting either for or against communism.
  • Treaty of Versailles

    Treaty of Versailles
    This treaty was on of the most important peace treaties that contributed to bringing WWI to an end. This relates to the Cold War because it enabled them to rebuild the Western zones and to integrate them into a western alliance without renewing fears of German aggression.
  • Nuremberg Trials

    Nuremberg Trials
    The purpose of these trials were to bring Nazi war criminals to justice for things such as the Holocaust and crimes against peace and humanity. There were 13 trials and mostly all the defendants were found guilty. These trials relate to the Cold War because international criminal law developed throughout the years following the trials that would take affect in later wars. Also, no other events, like the Germans took part in, are to ever happen again.
  • General Assembly

    This was established under the Charter of the United Nations and it was the deliberative, policymaking,, and representative organ of the United Nations. This relates to the Cold War because the United Nations was a battleground between communist and anti-communist countries.
  • Yalta Conference

    Yalta Conference
    This was the World War II meeting of the heads of government of the United States, the United Kingdom,and the Soviet union discussing Germany's and Europe's postwar reorganization. This was also known as the Crimea conference and the Argonaut Conference. This relates to the Cold War because this conference gave the Soviet Union control over Eastern Europe and it made the West feel like the Soviet Union wanted to expand communism.
  • United Nations

    United Nations
    Intergovernmental organization tasked to promote international cooperation and create and maintain international order. This was to prevent WWII from happening again; this also replaced the League of Nations. During the Cold war, the United Nation's mission was to preserve world piece but was complicated by the feud between the U.S. and soviet union and allies.
  • Baruch Plan

    Baruch Plan
    The Baruch plan was a proposal by the U.S. government, written by Bernard Baruch to the United Nations atomic energy commission. The U.S., Great Britain, and Canada called for international organization to regulate atomic energy. This relates to the cold war because the United States wanted to regulate nuclear war within the United Nations.
  • Iron Curtain Speech

    Iron Curtain Speech
    This speech was given by Winston Churchill and it was one of the many things that announced the beginning of the Cold War. Churchill wrote this speech to inform Americans that there is a divide between capitalism and communism.
  • Marshall Plan

    Marshall Plan
    The Marshall Plan was an example of "good deed foreign policy" designed to rebuild the Western European economies in the wake of WWII.The Marshall Plan needed lessened interstate barriers, a dropping of many regulations, and encouraged an increase in productivity, trade union membership, as well as the adoption of modern business procedures. This relates to the cold war because the US was trying to rebuild war torn countries from communism.
  • Berlin Airlift

    Berlin Airlift
    This airlift took place during the Berlin blockade and it was one of the first major crises of the Cold War. The Soviets blocked off roads, railways, and electrical power so no further goods could be shipped in. The Soviets goal was to force the allies to leave Berlin or stop them from unifying West Germany. The Western allies refused to leave, so in order to get supplies, they airlifted them. Stalin was embarrassed and the blockade ended.

    The Truman Doctrine was an american foreign policy that was made to counter soviet geopolitical expansion during the cold war. This relates to the Cold War because this implied American support towards other countries effected by communism. It soon became extended to be the basis of American Cold war Policy.
  • NATO Created

    NATO Created
    North American and Europe territories became an alliance for the purpose of defending their territories from the Soviet Union taking control over them. This connects to the Cold War because the Soviet Union would take control over other nations to protect them and make them stronger against any invasions that sprung upon them during the war. Because of this, NATO was created.
  • Chinese Communist Revolution

    Mao Zedong declared the creation of the People's Republic of China, which led to a war between Chinese communist party and Nationalist party. The fight was based on having communism in Japan or not. This relates to the Cold War because after the Chinese Communist Revolution, "2 China's" emerged which was a problem of the Cold War.
  • Nuclear Deterrent

    When at nuclear war, the ability to restrict another nation from bombing you; deter them, is called nuclear deterrence. During the nuclear war, the Soviets had atomic weapons ready to fire at the U.S. but we were ready to fire back. We ended up using nuclear deterrence with the threat of retaliation during the Cold war.

    Joseph McCarthy Speech
    In this speech, McCarthy warned people about the communism in America. He investigated hundreds of people calling them communists although most of them were not. This connects to the Cold War because this speech added to the growing tensions between the Soviet Union and the United States and it also symbolized terror of communism because of the Cold War.

    North Korea invaded South Korea with clashes along the boarder, north had aid from China and the Soviet Union and the South had aid from the United States. Korea then split into two different religions with different governments. Soviet Russia and the U.S. fought because they were helping separate parts of Korea when they were in the United States. the connection to the Cold War is that both parts of the country wanted different government rulings (communism vs Non-communism)..
  • Warsaw Pact

    This was a collective defense treaty that was signed in Warsaw among the soviets and seven Soviet satellite states of both central and eastern Europe during the cold war. This relates to the Cold War because this pact was a threat of communist dominance and was a red flag for those who didn't follow communism.
  • Sputnik Launched

    Sputnik Launched
    This was the first artificial satellite and it was launched by the Soviet Union. This relates to the Cold War because it made the arms race more tense and it also raised Cold War tensions. This launching made the U.S. feel like they were falling behind on new technology.
  • MAD

    Mutually Assured Destruction, this was a doctrine of military strategy and national security policy in which a full scale use of nuclear weapons by two or more opposing sides that would be destroyed by all sides (attacker and defender)
  • Bays of Pigs Invasion

    Bays of Pigs Invasion
    This was in invasion of Cuba undertaken by the U.S. military and the CIA. It attempted to push Castro from power, however, it failed and it made the U.S, military look very weak.
  • Fidel Castro Proclaims Communist Cuba

    Fidel Castro Proclaims Communist Cuba
    This raised red flags to U.S., Soviet Russia and Cuba became allies and Russia had stationed ships in Cuba to fight the United States. This led to the Cuban Missile Crisis. Kennedy and Khrushchev made an agreement where if Khrushchev removed missiles from Cuba, the U.S. would remove missiles from Turkey.

    During the cold war West Berlin was a geographical loophole in which thousands of East Germans fled to the Democratic West. so East German authorities built a wall to encircle West Berlin
  • Cuban Missile Crisis

    Cuban Missile Crisis
    This crisis is also commonly known "13 days", which took place between the Soviet Union and the U.S. The Soviets had missiles placed in Cuba and because of this, President Kennedy announced a naval blockade on any further shipments to Cuba. Neither side backed down to the situation, so President Kennedy proposed an agreement: The U.S is to never invade Cuba again and to remove missiles that are placed in Turkey if the Soviet Union removes its missiles from Cuba. The Soviets accepted the offer.

    United States was sent in to aid South Vietnam during the war. Soviet Russia and China threatened to intervene if we continued to help. North Vietnam fought with South Vietnam, north had help from Soviet Russia and China and South Vietnam was aided by the united states and South Korea. They fought guerrilla warfare against communism.

    SALT 1
    The Strategic Arms Limitation Talks (SALT), Nations met in Finland, which led to the ballistic missile treaty. This froze the number of strategic ballistic missile launches and provided for Submarine-launched ballistic missiles. The relation to the cold war, was that the United States and the Soviet Union needed to find a way to limit the arms access to each other.
  • Apollo 11

    America launched the Apollo 11 and it was the first manned lunar landing. Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins, and Edwin Aldrin were the astronauts who were aboard this mission. This connects to the Cold War because the launching of this won the Space Race for America against the Soviet Union.

    Known as the NPT, the international treaty was to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons and weapon technology. this was to promote the cooperation in the peaceful uses of nuclear disarmament. This relates to the cold war because everyone wanted to start to establish peace between all of the nations using nuclear warfare.
  • Kent State Shootings

    Kent State Shootings
    Students protested anti-war and the bombing of Cambodia by the U.S. Military which clashed with Ohio Guardsmen on campus.. The students threw rocks and bottles at police officers and lit bonfires in protest. because of this, 4 students were killed and 9 were injured. The protest was due to troops being sent to to Cambodia because it borders north and south Vietnam (who were having a war between the north having communism and the south being democratic and having a republic)
  • Fall of Saigon

    Fall of Saigon
    This was the capture of Saigon, which is the capital of south Vietnam (republic). this was captured by the army of Vietnam and the Liberation front of South Vietnam. This marked the end of the Vietnam war. once a democratic republic, now a communistic government by north Vietnam.
  • Deng Xiaoping

    He was a Chinese revolutionary and politician and he wanted to increase the People's Republic of China's economic ties with the west while also keeping distant relations with the Soviet Union. He connects to the Cold War because he wanted to prevent communism from spreading.
  • Pope John Paul II

    Pope John Paul II
    He was the first non-Italian pope in more than 400 years and he spoke for freedom and against tyranny. He fought for human rights and he eventually brought down communism in Poland. He helped conquer fears and fought hard for freedom that it brought down walls and opened doors. He connected to the Cold War because he was one that was in the fight for stopping communism from spreading.
  • Margaret Thatcher

    Margaret Thatcher
    Also known as the "Iron Lady", she was the first elected woman to be prime minister. She relates to the Cold War because she led the west to win and contributed to ending the war.
  • SALT II

    SALT II
    This agreement to limit strategic launches resulted in an agreement, but the U.S. dint ratify in response to the soviet war in Afghanistan. In retaliation, the soviet union also didn't ratify this agreement. This way, the U.S. and soviets were "even"; nobody was ahead or behind anyone.

    The Soviets took control over Kabul and several other parts of Afghanistan. This relates to the Cold War because this was the only time that the Soviet Union invaded another country outside of the Eastern Bloc.

    The wall kept Western "fascists" from entering East Germany. The wall fell when the head of the German communist party announced that anybody could cross the wall if the please. Later that day, the wall was surrounded and swarmed by many people. This relates to the Cold War because the wall prevented communism from spreading and it impacted other nations.
  • Lech Walesa

    Lech Walesa
    He was a Polish politician and labour activist. He formed and led Solidarity, which was Poland's first independent trade union. He later became the president of Poland and his years in office marked rapid transformation to a growing free-market economy. He affected the Cold War because he was anti-communist and he helped bring down Poland's communist government.
