    He graduates 6th in class
  • Joining the army

    Right after graduating Sherman immediatly enlisted in the army and was sent to Floirda to fight in the Seminole War
  • Resigned from the army

    Goes to work at the Louisiana Military Academy
  • Joining the army again

    Resigns as a superintendent at the outbreak of the civil war, colnol in the 13th United States Infantry
  • Promotion

    William is promoted to brigadier general, because of how well he preformed in the battle of manassas
  • Battle of Shiloh

  • Yet another promotion

    Promoted to major general
  • Capture of Atlanta

    Sherman had launched a campaign, that is now known as modern warfare by trying to destroy the South economically.

    Sherman's March to the Sea

    Leaving behind a trail of destruction over 40 miles wide, this campaign only lasted a little over a month but was the most destructive campaign against civilians
  • The capture of Savannah

    William wired Lincoln to tell him that he has an early Christmas present, the city of Savannah
  • The capture of Columbia

    Sherman and his men capture Columbia, South Carolina. They set many fires that destroyed large portions of the city
  • Accepting surrender

    Sherman accepts the surrender of Johnston and all the troops in the Carolinas, Georgia, and Florida which was the largest surrender of confederate troops

    After the war Sherman stayed in the army and rose to the position of full General, praised for his ideas of total warfare.

  • My opinion

    William Sherman played a tremendous role in the defeat of the confederate army. Not only did he capture Atlanta and Savannah, but he was able to get four states to surrender; Georgia, Florida, and the Caolianas.
