William Golding was born in Saint Columb Minor, Cornwall, England. His mother was an active suffragette and his father worked as a schoolmaster. -
Golding attends College
in 1930, Golding began attending at Brasenose College at Oxford. He studied science until his third year when he switched to the literature program. -
Golding graduates college
He graduated from Oxford with a Bachelor of Arts in English and a diploma in education. -
Teaching
Golding began teaching English and philosophy in Salsbury and at Bishop Wordsworth School. His teaching experience would serve as inspiration for his novel Lord of the Flies. -
Navy (1940-1945)
He spent five years in the navy. In his wartime experience during World War II, he began to see the evil in humankind. -
First Published Novel
In 1954, Golding published his first and most acclaimed novel, Lord of the Flies. It was his first published novel he wrote after being rejected 21 times. It was about a group of boys who are stranded on a deserted island after a plane wreck. -
Lord of the Flies is made into a film.
In 1963, Director Peter Brook made of a film adaptation of Golding's acclaimed novel. This was a year after Goding quit teaching. -
Awarded the Novel Peace Prize.
In 1983, William Golding was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for literature. -
Knighted
In 1988, Golding was knighted by Queen Elizabeth o9f England. He was among several hundred monarch subjects who were rewarded for notable to public life. -
Death
On June 19, 1993, William Golding dies of a heart attack in Perranarworthal, Cornwall.
