Salmon obtained his Ph.D and held teaching positions at Washington State College; ULCA; Northwestern University, and Brown University.

Wesley married Merrilee Ashby, her self a philosopher of science.

Salmon and his wife left Indiana and took positions at the University of Arizona, to stay there until 1981.
