Harlow was born in Annapolis, Maryland. His mother, a teen at the time, could not take care of him and put him up for adoption.

At age two Harlow was adopted by a Vietnamese family.

After moving Harlow's mom starts teaching Harlow to sail and he develops a passion for it.

Harlow's mom takes him on a special boating trip but, in a tragic turn of events only Harlow comes home.

To deal with his grief Harlow's dad takes his anger out on Harlow by, yelling and hitting things.

Harlow blames himself for his mother's death and gets into the habit of pushing people away, which causes his relationships with friends and family be ruined.

Harlow decides that after almost a year of his father's abuse he needs to leave. He decides he is going to travel around the world in a boat-in honor of his mother.

On his travels while in Bangladesh, Harlow meets a girl that he is immediately drawn to, her name is Finley. They become friends and she joins him on his travels.

When leaving Australia, Harlow and Finley are caught in a horrible storm bringing back bad memories for Harlow.

After the storm Harlow and Finley end up shipwrecked on La Roche Godon.

After the shipwreck Harlow and Finley have nothing and must figure out how to contact someone to rescue them.

Finley and Harlow roam the island until they finally find a small, remote village.

While at the village Harlow discovers that his mother is alive and he wants to go find her.
