Voting Rights in America

    In 1790, white male adult-property owners were given the opportunity to vote for the United States of America. This was about 10-16% of America's population. This happened about the time of the Civil War. At this time the men had to be at least 21 in order to vote. No black-colored men were allowed to vote yet.

    The rise of the political parties made a dramatic expansion to voting rights. Now, ALL white men had the opportunity to vote for the United States of America. After this revolution, they decided that poor white men were not allowed to vote, but this did not last a long time before returning to normal. After this, they were even able to cast their opinion for more offices than just President of the United States.

    By 1869, the 15th amendement abolished slavery and gave citeznship to African Americans. It was told that African men would be able to vote one this amendement was made. Once this happened, black men were freedmen and were required to fend for their own. Even though this amendment was made, they technically still were not all allowed to vote.

    This amendment prohibits the federal and state governments from denying a citizen the right to vote because of their "race, color, or previous condition of servitude". This was very difficult to pass because many disagreed and went against the 15th amendment. But in the end, it was established and all nlack men were allowed to vote! African American women were still not allowed to vote.

    The 19th amendement guarantees that all white women now have the right to vote. Although it was passed by congress on June 4, 1919, it was not ratified until August 20, 1920. This was such a big change for American because back then, women did not have many rights at all and having the chance to vote was a HUGE deal to them. It totally changed America!

    In the 1920'a there was an act called the "Chinese Exclusion Repeal Act". On December 17.1943 this act was repealed by the 'Magnuson Act" which made Asian Ameicans full United States of America citizens. They made up 2% of The United States of America. After this, they were granted the ability to vote for the United States of America,

    In 1965, 250,000 more African Americans were given the right to vote. Including colored women! Finally, everyone in the United States of America could vote. This was also such a big deal for everyone in America because everyone was finally seen as equals. I am assuming it was an eye-opener for all whites because they finally had the same rights as the people they looked down on for so long.
