    NATO stands for North Atlantic Treaty Organization, it is a military alliance of now 26 countries from Europe, and 2 North American Countries. This was formed in 1949 with 12 founding members. The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) grew by including Greece and Turkey in 1952. With NATOs expansion, Russia had the urge to take punishing steps if NATO continued with its plans to station war planes and air defences in the Baltic states which caused tensions to rise.

The annexation by Russia took place in the aftermath of the Ukrainian Revolution. This annexation took place on March 18th 2014 as Russia managed the territory of two Russian federal subjects, the city of Sevastopol and the Republic of Crimea.
