    In December 1991, the Soviet Union collapse into 15 separate countries. The collapse was formed by the west as a victory for freedom, democracy over totalitarianism, and evidence of the higher quality of capitalism over socialism. The split of the Soviet Union helped the entire world with all of the economic and military alliances. The Soviet Union wanted a communist country when everyone else was fighting for their freedom to not be controlled by the Soviet Union.

    Ukraine was constituent republic of the Soviet Union. On August 24, 1991 they declared their freedom, when the coup failed in Moscow. About 90 percent of Ukrainians voted for their country’s independence. They prohibited the activities of communist party of Ukraine. Ukraine was ready to have freedom again.

    Russia seizes control of Crimea; Republic of Crimea is declared with the intention of joining Russia after a disputed referendum. Russian forces seize the Supreme Council and other key establishments. Treaty signed between Crimea and Russia at the Kremlin on 18 March to formally initiate Crimea's accession to the Russian Federation.

The process of joining the alliance is governed by Article 10 of the North Atlantic Treaty, which allows only for the invitation of other European States and by agreements. The incorporation of countries formerly in the Soviet sphere of influence has been a cause of increased tension between NATO countries and Russia.
