Isaac Singer was born on October 27, 1811 in Pittstown, New York. He is the youngest child of Adam and Ruth Singer. -

Singer receives a patent for improved sewing machine
Singer was working in a machine-shop in Boston in 1851 when he was given a sewing machine to repair. Eleven days later he had constructed a better sewing machine, which he patented.Singer's version of the sewing machine was the first to allow continuous and curved stitching, with an overhanging arm that held the needle bar over a horizontal table. This design made it possible to sew on any part of the work. Motion was communicated to the needle arm and shuttle by means of gears. -
