Isaac Singer was born on October 27, 1811 in Pittstown, New York. He is the youngest child of Adam and Ruth Singer.

When he was 10, his parents divorced. After his father remarried and moved his family to Hannibal/Oswego County. Because of his bad relationship with his mother he ran away, at the age of 12.

After working for 10 years as an aprentice machinist, he created a drill to carve rock. He used this invention to help his brother dig through the Illinois Waterway He sold this invention to I&M Canal Building Company for $2,000.

Singer was working in a machine-shop in Boston in 1851 when he was given a sewing machine to repair. Eleven days later he had constructed a better sewing machine, which he patented.Singer's version of the sewing machine was the first to allow continuous and curved stitching, with an overhanging arm that held the needle bar over a horizontal table. This design made it possible to sew on any part of the work. Motion was communicated to the needle arm and shuttle by means of gears.
