In 1926, a General Strike was called by the Trades Union Congress in support of the coal miners' stand against enforced pay-cuts. It lasted only nine days in May but brought large parts of Britain to a standstill, including London where there were armoured cars on Oxford Street.

In the 1920s, Britain's economy was already struggling to pay for the effects of World War I. Then, in 1929, the US stock market crashed. World trade slumped, prices fell, credit dried up, and many countries protected their domestic market by taxing foreign imports.

Hitler promised to get Germany free of the Treaty of Versailles (gaining the trust of many). He also promised to solve the unemployment issue. Hitler had burned the Reichstag and blamed it on the communists and used the fear to become the Führer.

The Jarrow march took place in 1936. The marches involved hundreds of unemployed coal and shipyard workers men marching 300 miles from Jarrow to London, in protest to the suffering that depression had brought to the people from the north. Depression was an economic down time in Britain in the 1920s and 1930s that caused major retrenchments in the country, and the marchers wanted back their jobs.

At approximately 8.15am on 6 August 1945 a US B-29 bomber dropped an atomic bomb on the Japanese city of Hiroshima, instantly killing around 80,000 people. Three days later, a second bomb was dropped on Nagasaki, causing the deaths of 40,000 more. The dropping of the bombs, which occurred by executive order of US President Harry Truman, remains the only nuclear attack in history.
