Through the Years Of the Cold War

  • Yalta Conference

    Yalta Conference
    The Yalta onference was when U.S president Franklin D Roosevelt, British prime minister Winston Churchill, and Soviet leader Joseph Stalin met at Yalta to decite war and post war plans. They all agreed to divide Germany into zones, and made Germany pay for the Soviet Unions loss of life and poverty from World War II.

    In July of 1946, Stalin declared that communism and democracy could no longer exsist in the same world. So Europe was divided into east and west Europe. The soviets controlled east, so they were now communists. This division was called " the iron curtain"
  • Containing Communism

    This was president Trumans policy to try and stop the spread of communism. He thought that if it got to one nation, it would soon fallto its neighbrs, so he wanted to stp it while he could.

    There were alliances forming everywhere. There were alliances formed between democratic nations, and communist nations. Theese alliances were formed because everyone had to be ready to fight at all times.

    NATO and Warsaw Pact formed
    The North Atlantic Treaty Organization was a democratic aliance between the U.S,Canada, and ten western European countries. Communist countries such as Soviet Union, East Germany, etc, formed the Warsaw pact in retaliation.
  • War in Korea

    Korea was divided into North ans South Korea. Communist north korea invades democratic south Korea on the 38th parelell. There was no winner in this war. infact, everything was the same if not worse tan when it started.
  • War in Vietnam begins

    Vietnam was now split into two,North and South, communist allies such as the Soviet Union supported North, and democratic countries such as the U.S supported south. Communists won this war.
  • The Cuban Missile Crisis

    The Cuban Missile Crisis
    The U.S had found some Soviet missils in Cuba and demaned removal because of how close they were to the U.S. If the Soviets withdrew them, U.S promiced not to invade. Cubas economy depended of the Soviets decision.
  • Red Guards formed

    Red Guards formed
    As communist leader in china, Mao Zedong urged students to "learn revolution bu making revolution". Many students responded negitivly and formed a militia called the Red Guards.
  • SALT signed

    SALT signed
    SALT stands for Strategic Arms Limitation. It was a 5 year treaty that limited the ammount of missiles each country could have and launch. It was signed by Nixon and Brezhnev.
  • The Cold War ends

    The Cold War ends
    In 1991, the long Cold War ended. This was also the end of communism and the Soviet Union, which is now known as Russia.
  • Nations regaining independance

    After the collapse of communism, there were many countries left without a government. So they had to regain their independance and governments.
