Thomas Kuhn's Teaching Career
Thomas Kuhn obtained his Ph.D. in the history of science at Harvard University in 1949. This led him to his teaching career in 1951 where he started at Harvard University teaching the philosophy of science. He taught at Harvard until 1956 until he moved to the University of California at Berkley, where he stayed until 1964. After his time at Berkley, he started teaching at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1979 and stayed there until 1991. -
The Copernican Revolution
This was Thomas Kuhn's first book, written in 1957, about the Copernican revolution. The Copernican revolution was a study of the development of the heliocentric theory. The heliocentric theory explains that the sun is at the center of the solar system. This book explained how and why the revolution happened and why the heliocentric theory continued to progress. -
The Structure of Scientific Revolutions
Thomas Kuhn's second book was names The Structure of Scientific Revolutions. This book explains the four phases of science which are the pre-paradigmatic phase, normal science, crisis, and scientific revolution. The Structure of Scientific Revolutions (Normal Science)
Thomas Kuhn wrote that normal science was the best place for science to be because nobody questioned the paradigm. Normal science stops other scientists from being paranoid or too hard of critics on one particular theory. Over time anomalies will begin to arise in the theory. This is what causes scientific revolution. Kuhn believed that scientific revolutions are good but it is necessary to return back to normal science to continue good research. -
